Babies: 6 - 9 Months

discouraged and confused

My DD had her 6 month well baby check up today. Everything went great. She is in the 62nd percentile for height and 74th percentile for weight (26.25 in, 17.9 lbs). The last two appointments we had the Dr. was a little concerned about her weight being low, which I understand, she was tiny. She still looks tiny! At this appointment the Dr. made a reference to her weight and suggested we cut out MOTN feedings. DD recently started waking up once in the middle of the night to eat. She also started solids at 4 months, obviously causing her to gain some weight. I guess I am just confused...is 17.9 lbs too big? I thought she needed to gain weight since she was so tiny, now she is too big??

Re: discouraged and confused

  • The biggest concern might be how quickly she increased in percentiles since her last check up. So for example, if she was in the 20th percentile at 4 months and all of a sudden she is now in the 62nd percentile, that means she gained a lot of weig

  • My pede said they are concerned when a baby jumps more than two percentiles either way from one appointment to the next, so that may be the case. Perhaps she just spiked her own weight curve leading the doctor to believe she was gaining too fast. I know w

  • Don't feel discouraged! My DD was almost 17 pounds and 26.75 inches at her 6 month appointment. She STTN, nurses 4 to 5 times a day and has 2 solid meals. I think you just need to do what you feel is best for your child and your situation.
  • I have never worried to much about the height, weight percentages. DD was tiny when she was born and has stayed tiny...She is only 14.7lbs at 9months, jsut as a comparison. Her Dr. is not worried. The bottom line is someone has to be at the bottom of the
  • I've heard they get concerned with great drops or gains in short periods of time. For example my LO has since birth been in the high teens to low 20s in percentile and Doc said that's fine as long as she's consistent.
