Newborn question

Does anyone know when or if a low fever is a concern in a newborn? E is running a temp of 99.9 and is 3 wks old. He has been ridiculously crabby at night for the last 3 days. At first I thought it was something souring my milk. Then I thought he might be constipated. Now I have no idea. Suggestions?

    My doctor said 100.4 is the rule of thumb to be concerned. H had a 99.5 temp and diarrhea over the weekend and they were more worried about the diarrhea.

    Is it a possible growth spurt?

    Anything under 100.4 is not considered a fever in an infant.

    For your fever consideration, my paediatrician said it was okay to administer half a millilitre of Tylenol to a baby under 1 month.

    I think it depends on where you're taking the temperature - I think it's 100.4 if taken rectally, lower if in another location.

    I was also told 100.4 if taken rectally but then told never to do the rectal myself for fear of perforating something. We were told to use a forehead thermometer as they squirm so much when done under the arm and to call their office or after hours numbe

    Also take his temperature when he is calm. His body temperature will go up when he has been crying.

    Our pedi also said 100.4 rectally.  She also said that infants tend to have a slightly higher temp in the evening.

    Make sure he's not over dressed too. One time our LO had a low grade "fever" and the midwife suggested taking him down to only a diaper and taking his temp again and it was totally normal. We felt like idiots.
