Hi Everyone, First time to this board. I have a DS who just turned two on March 5. It has just been brought to my attention by his school that he doesn't speak at all when he is there, nor does he smile! Or interact much with the other children. He pays attention to all the rules, does what they ask participates in all the activities -- but no talking no interaction and smiling! (Not sure why it took this long for them to inform me since he has been going since August.) I was asked if he speaks at home and I was shocked because he is a chatterbox! After googling "my child doesn't speak at school" I came across information for Selective Mutism.
Any ladies on this board familiar with this? I spent an hour or so on the phone talking with my girlfriend who is a speech pathologist and is quite familiar with this and it seems to describe him to a T. She is going to drop in his class and do a more formal observation and we will go from there. Just looking to find out if anyone else out there has heard of this or is going through the same thing.
His school originally thought that he might just have speech issues and didn't talk at all and they were just as shocked when I described him at home. It was like we were describing two very opposite children. Any advice or anything from any of you ladies that may have dealt or are dealing with this would be greatly appreciated.
TIA!
