My little girl is finally here and arrived very quickly on Friday, March 15. I had a 39 week appointment Thursday and was 4cm. The doctor stripped my membranes and said I'd have a baby within a day or two. Sure enough, I woke up Friday morning at 2am with a lot of back pain and pain in my upper legs. I didn't think much of it since I always feel like my back hurts so I dozed on and off until 3am. At that point, I woke up and couldn't get back to sleep. I was in bathroom quite a bit with soft stools (sorry) and decided to head downstairs to watch TV and see if I could sleep. My contractions, all in the form of back pain, were strong and I had to walk through them but they were 10-20 minutes apart so I figured we had time. I took a shower at 4:30 since I had nothing better to do. Around 5am, I crawled back in bed, waking DH. I told him I was having a lot of back pain but we could try to sleep. At that point, I felt either a contraction or a kick from baby and felt a pop and a small gush. I jumped up saying my water had broken and thankfully didn't get anything on my bed!
So DH took this as a sign to get up and ready. He started to get dressed and I told him that he had time to take a shower. I debated calling the doctor and calling my sister who was going to come over to watch DS or just waiting until a more acceptable hour. Thankfully, I called the Dr. who told me to head into L&D and also called my sister and told to come over. At this point, my contractions/back pain were getting unbearable and I could barely brush my teeth. My sister lives 10 minutes away and it felt like forever for her to get there. She finally arrived and we were on our way to the hospital.
The car ride was excruciating. I tried to time my contractions but couldn't since they felt constant. When we got to the hospital around 6am, they put me in observation which really pissed me off. I kept saying I knew I was in labor. My water had broke, my contractions were one on top of the other, and I wanted to be admitted and I wanted an epidural, asap. The nurse verified that my water had broke (duh) and then she did an internal. I just remember her saying, "Honey, you are at 9cm. You aren't getting an epidural. You're going to have a baby soon." I started to bawl. The only birth plan I had was to get to the hospital and get drugs and that was not going to happen.
They wheeled me into a room and I immediately got on my knees and put my head on the back of the bed. I kept screaming about my back and DH and the nurses rubbed it which helped immensely. I had two contractions in that position and screamed about the pressure I was feeling. The doctor wasn't there yet so they told me not to push and made me rock my hips I guess to keep from pushing. Finally the doctor showed up and they told me to flip on my back and put my legs up. This was the most uncomfortable position for me, unfortunately. I had another contraction and pushed and felt like my body was being ripped open. I yelled that I couldn't do this anymore and the doctor told me to look down and I saw that LO was already half way out. She slipped the rest of the way out and they put her on my chest. It was the absolute most amazing feeling. The labor pains were gone just like that I was overcome with just holding my daughter. Charlotte Olivia was born at 6:27am, within 30 minutes of arriving at the hospital and with one push. She is a peanut at 6lb 9oz with a head full of dark hair. I had a small internal tear but was able to get up and go to the bathroom with little assistance afterwards. Recovery has been a breeze for me.
So I never in my life thought I'd have a natural birth. It was something I admired women for doing and something I wish I was strong enough to do myself but I would never consider it because I didn't think I'd be able to do it. Those moments in labor and realizing I was doing this without drugs were horrible but I'm glad that things worked out the way that they did and I experienced a med free birth. I felt that relief and emotion after DS was born (with an epidural) but those feelings were 100 times stronger going natural. To all those women who labor and push for hours without drugs, I salute you and your strength. Fortunately I only was in hard labor for an hour and only pushed once and could never imagine doing that for hours. So if you're thinking of going natural, go for it! It is quite the experience! And good luck to all of you waiting on your LO's arrival!
