Sugar & Milk

FYI (I checked this out, snopes and FDA website). The FDA is requesting comments on a proposal that would allow artificial sweeteners to be added to milk and milk products WITHOUT adding it to the label. This includes aspartame, etc.

I don't claim to be some organic crunchy momma or whatever, but I feel I have a right to be able to read the label on my food and understand what's in it.  I'm not really happy with this thought... and after Hubby got all upset in the grocery store yesterday over these lil milk-boxes that weren't in the cold section (how do you call it milk if it doesn't require refridgeration?) I decided to do a bit more research this morning. So anyway, if you're interested in the FDA comment place, or just learning more, go here:

Re: Sugar & Milk

  • It's going to be on the ingredient label, they just still want to call the product milk which right now they are not allowed to do. I don't understand how the FDA thinks aspartame in anything is okay. I have zero faith in the FDA though.

  • I heard about this and I completely disagree with it. I only buy organic milk because it last longer than non-organic milk. Things like this will have me continuing to shell out an extra $1 on organic milk just so that I know it doesn't contain

I'm confused. Reading the website you linked, it seems like it'll still be on the label, but it just won't prevent them from calling it "milk"? It wouldn't have to be called "reduced calorie milk" or whatever? I think when they're talking about it not

  • It is for this reason and several others that my husband and I drink raw milk. Now, please dont judge me for drinking it...my dr even frowns upon it...but the health benefits of raw milk far out weigh the possiblity of any negatives. Regular milk that is

  • It won't be added to just milk. It'll be added as part of a flavoring or some other artificial additive in the milk product.

The solution is really simple if this does go forth. Drink/eat dairy from reputable sources and avoid extra ingredie

  • I heard this on the radio a while back but really have to read the article you put up.  I don't understand why we need more additives and things in our food.

  • I know people who have bad reactions to aspartame. And I've seen it happen. It's not just in their head. It was like an allergic reaction because they got Benadryl in her and it stopped. I can't imagine them not listing it on the label.
