MTHFR ladies, please come in...

Hi ladies,

I hope you don't mind a question from a lurker.  I'm not pregnant yet, but was recently diagnosed with MTHFR c677t homozygous, as part of an immune workup.

I currently take OTC folic acid (1600 mcg per day - 800 in the am and 800 in the pm) and the RI I spoke with said it's OK to continue with that dosage.  He didn't feel like I needed prescription folic acid, like Folgard, since my homocysteine levels are within normal range.

So my question is, if you're MTHFR positive, do you take OTC folic acid or do you take a prescription strength version?  And what is your dosage?

I thought I read that OTC folic acid isn't effective if you are MTHFR positive, because we can't metabolize folic acid and that only "methylfolate" would be effective.

Based on this new diagnosis, I'm going to ask what my RE will recommend...but in the meantime, was curious as to the protocol others are using.

Thanks in advance - your advice and feedback is very much appreciated!! Big Smile

Me: AMA, DOR, undetectable AMH, carrier of SMA, MTHFR homozygous C677T, high cytokines, low IGg B cells, Factor XIII V34l mutation, High Anti-Phosphatidylethanolmine, borderline hypothyroid and mildly insulin resistant.

MH: No known issues, aside from MTHFR.

Recommendations from RI: LIT, Humira, IVIG, Lovenox, Baby Aspirin, Folic Acid, Low-dose synthroid and Metformin.

Currently taking:  Pre-Natal vitamins, Foltanx, Low-dose synthroid and Metformin.

When cycling also taking: Baby Aspirin, Lovenox, Humira and IVIG.

TTC since 7/11/09..with medical intervention starting in 2010, including 4 failed IVF's and 6 failed IUI's...only "success" was a chemical pregnancy in 11/2012 (credited to use of DE).

FET #1 (11th cycle) on 8/23/13 = BFN.

FET #2 (12th cycle) Transfer of last two (day 6) donor egg blasts on 1/22/14 = BFP, EDD = 10/10/14 (please stick little BOY!)

I take an OTC version, in the same dosage as you, 800mcg in the am, and 800mcg again in the PM.

FWIW I buy mine at Wal-Mart, which is my least favorite store on earth, but they are the only place around that sells an 800mcg pill, instead of takin

Hi Aurora and thanks for the speedy response! :)

I actually take my gummy Prenatals in the am, which includes the first dose of 800mcg, so I only have to deal with the (2) 400mcg at night.  But I know what you mean

The only folic acid I get is from my prenatal vitamin? Am I supposed to be taking additional? This is my 3rd pregnancy, and I have never taken extra folic acid?

My prenatal also has folic acid (only 400mcg I believe) but my MFM specialists wants me to take the additional 800mcg in the am with my prenatal. Forgot to mention that, I'm so used to filling my little pill minder th

For the previous poster - It's not an MTHFR deficiency - it's a gene mutation.

MTHFR is an enzyme that is used to convert amino acid homocysteine to methionine.  ACOG and ASRM have BOTH removed it from any recurrent pregnancy loss work-up

Thanks to all of you who responded....it is very much appreciated!!

I will definitely be asking my RE if he thinks I need the prescription strength, given I'm homozygous.

Dahila and Katharine - Since you are both homozygous, I wanted to ask...do you know if Folguard is the "metholfolate version" or just a super high dose of folic acid?

Folgard is not.  It just has a higher dose of regular folic acid in it (2.2 mg).  The theory
