NST question

I had my first  NST at my appointment today, I'm about a week overdue. Listening to the heartbeat, it sounded like it was slowing down and speeding up a lot. While watching the print out, I noticed that the FHR would go back and forth between the 120's and would go as high as 200. At every appointment so far, it has been in the 140's and 150's when they checked with the Doppler. To me, today's readings seemed to be very high and very low, but the nurse said everything looked good. I know I'm certainly not an expert as a FTM with no medical background, but I just can't shake this feeling that those numbers were kind of extreme. Anyone else have experience with this? I have a feeling I'm worrying too much about this.

Re: NST question

  • They want the baby's heartrate to vary during a NST. It can be a sign of distress if the baby's heartrate doesn't go up with movement. I have them 2x/week for GD and last week I got sent to L&D because his HR was 130 no matter what. They couldn't get it to change. Once I got to L&D it was fine.

  • It's okay for the heart rate to vary. I've had nst's for a total of 2x/wk for 4 months altogether during 2 pg.

  • I've had twice weekly NSTs for the last month and a half now and the heartrate does go up and down quite a bit for mine depending on the day.  Sleeping = mid to high 130s.  Awake but not moving = mid to high 140s.  Squirmy = mid 150s.  All out spazzy kicking or punching = high 170s/low 180s.

Sometimes if baby wiggles off the monitor, the reading will go up to 220 before it goes down again because it gets confused about what it is picking up I think.  I asked about it once and the nurse said it wasn't actually reading a real rhythm and not to worry.

  • i just got back from my first nst and had the same thing happen! i freaked out!

my LO moves around a lot so it was kind of hard to keep a continuous monitor on her heartbeat and a lot of times the machine would lose it for a minute and when it came back it would be as high as 204 but other times go really low. the nurse and my ob said that sometimes with the baby moving a lot when the monitor loses track of the heartbeat it can sometimes pick up both mom and babies heart rate for a minute and not to be concerned.

i had to have the nurse turn the monitor away from me because i kept freaking out! so dont worry youre not alone, and i dont think there is any cause for concern. if there were, they would have sent you over the L&D. good luck mama!

  • This is normal and what they are looking for.  The baby's heart varies as it sleeps, you eat, it moves, etc...

  • Phew! Thank you :)

I think I've just seen too many baby shows on TLC where they rush into a c-section because of decelorations, etc. so seeing the peaks on the print out had me a bit concerned.

For some reason the nurses and a few of the doctors in the office think this is my 2nd baby, I'm guessing maybe I look like someone else? They're constantly asking me questions about my first pregnancy, and I've found they don't always explain things like they would for a FTM...but I should also learn to ask questions when they pop into my head instead of worrying the whole rest of the day.

     Anyways, thanks again :)
