We want to eventually get both, but our finances are telling us that one might have to wait until after our lil peanut is born. So, with that in mind, which one do you all think is more important to have at the very beginning?
bouncer/swing is more important to me. I would rather get the vid monitor later because really the baby will probably be right next to you more now than in his/her crib sleeping.
Do you have one or both on your registry and not had a baby shower (if you're getting one)?
If you've not had a shower, wait and see if either is purchased for you, then get the other.
If you're not having a shower and are getting both yourself, I'd likely get the swing first (LO would be rooming with DH and me for the first month or so) and get the monitor later.
If you're having LO in the nursery from day 1, get the monitor for your own peace of mind.

Swing/bouncer. DD didn't sleep in her room until 3 months so that's when we started using the monitor.

The video monitor was an absolute must. DD hated her swing and bouncer. We actually still use the video monitor because MH is paranoid It was really great to have. We are also in favor of the baby sleeping in it's own room from Day 1 and almost always napping in there. From the PP comments I'm in the minority, but it really worked for us.
Our monitor is still in its box from my first DS ( he ended up sleeping with us for the first 14 months) so I definitely think the swing/ bouncer will be more useful in the beginning.
DS1: 4/15/2011
Dx: ASD, SPD and receptive and expressive speech delay at 21 months
Could you get both but used? I see video monitors on craigslist all the time for about $40 and you can get a nice used swing or bouncer at a consignment store for a decent price.
We've never had a video monitor and only used audio monitors until they were about 18 months. I used the bouncer swing from the first day we got home from the hospital so the kiddos could
hang out in the batnroom while I showered.

Mom to two beautiful girls and forever labor buddy to the fab lady MandaPanda518!
I would definitely get the swing and/or bouncer used. I got a swing at a garage sale for $10. The cloth comes off to wash and I cleaned the rest. I plan on doing the same with a bouncer. You can check craigslist or facebook has swap shops and there is probably some in your area. And I would just get a audio monitor, but I don't think the video is necessary and did not use it when I was a nanny. I was always doing something so I just waited for baby to cry. Good luck!
The swing/bouncer is more important IMO. In reality when is the baby going to be out of ears reach for long periods of time in the first month or so anyway? I don't think we used the monitor until he went into his own room at 3/4 months.
Thanks for all the opinions! I think we're leaning towards the swing/rocker/bouncer first since we'll either have our peanut in our room for the first month or so, or if we do put him/her in the crib, it's right next to us and we don't have a door on our room anyway. We're both pretty light sleepers who wake up everytime one of the dogs move, so we figure we "should" be okay for the first month at least...

Honestly, check out a second hand store and see what you can score. Swing and bouncer seats can be washed. You may be able to get all three with this route.
We got an audio monitor as a gift, but never used it for either child. We lived in small and/or horribly insulated old homes/apartments and a monitor was never necessary because you could hear everything from any part of the house. Also, my kids were very loud. My son did not like the first swing we got him, but later, he loved the swing. My daughter spent a lot of time in the swing from day 1, so I would go with the swing.
Re: which is more important? Swing/bouncer or video/audio monitor?
Swing vs bouncer- get a swing with a detachable bouncer.
Monitor- just get an audio monitor. The video is not necessary.

Ditto this.
In 8 years and 4 babies, we've never used a swing (I've borrowed them, but the babies never liked it) or a video monitor.
But we've used the heck out of 4 fisher price bouncy chairs
