Babies: 0 - 3 Months

When will LO sleep through the night?

Hello Mommies,

My LO will be 5 months next week. I'm curious as to when babies usually sleep through the night? My little guy will wake at least once...last night it was twice! He won't go to bed til 9:30 or 10pm. I'm breastfeeding, and he is definitely getting enough throughout the day. Is it too early to try sleep training?

Thanks!

Re: When will LO sleep through the night?

  • Yeah he's getting enough throughout the day..to last him the day.

He needs to eat at night..to last the night. Baby's digest breast milk fast, hence why they need to constantly eat.

Our babies aren't even at 5 months yet, so maybe you'd be best to ask the 3-6 or 6-9 group this question. But we'll probably tell you the same thing they will - some babies sleep through the night and some babies don't. There are babies on this board who have been sleeping through the night since 2 weeks old. There are some babies who don't sleep through the night and are 1 YEAR old. It's all about your own baby's sleeping habits.

Liam still wakes 3 times a night to eat, and that's fine with me. Don't be in a rush, babies need what they need when they need it =)

(If by sleep training you mean just not feeding him when he wakes up hungry at night (which he clearly doing if he eats when you put him at the breast) then yes, I would say it is too 'early' to sleep train)

  • DS did not STTN until he was 9-10 months old, every child is different. Personally I think your child will decided when they are ready to STTN.

As for sleep training most books say you can start at 6 months, but just know that certain sleep training methods do not work for every child. Do not push a method that clearly is not working. Read, educate your self and find things that work for you which may mean taking a few tips from different methods.

  • i've heard they sttn when they are "developmentally ready." my dd started at 2 mos. w/o sleep training and she is primarily breastfed. we have a nighttime routine starting at 9pm - bath, massage, jammies, swaddle, bottle and by 1030-11pm she is fast asleep. good luck!

  • My DD will be 3 months on Monday and is not STTN - the longest she has ever gone is almost 6 hours, the norm is 3-5 hours at night.  I did a phone consultation with a sleep trainer in my area (personally recommended by a friend) - they do not subscribe to CIO and told me they wouldn't even really do a consultation with recommendations until the baby was at least 4 months old.
