November 2013 Moms

Any Lapband/WLS (Or even those who have lost a lot of weight) people here?

I was banded December 2011 and have lost over 100lbs since that time..

The progesterone/presnidone being hungry all the time followed with feeling queasy is something I'm having an issue with and I cant seem to find any others out there! lol

I am supposed to only be able to eat about 1/2 cup at a time, but since Its been a really long time since my fill.. I am eating pretty big portions which is kind of messing with my head.  I spent a year losing weight and now the idea of regaining 10-20lbs is frightening to me but necessary I know.

Re: Any Lapband/WLS (Or even those who have lost a lot of weight) people here?

  • I lost 85 lbs over the course of 14 months starting in October 2011.  I have kept it off, and just continue to eat exactly as I was eating before I found out I am pregnant.  I know I'm getting enough calories, I'm not over-indulging.  I am just keeping the same balance that I did before.

I know that having been here before (3rd pregnancy) I know what to expect.  My first pregnancy I gained 76 lbs (about 30lbs of that was due to DS1's birth defect), my second I gained 50 lbs and I know that is exactly what I want to avoid.

That being said, the only way to avoid it is to keep a sane attitude about what's going in my mouth.  I have had a ton of practice over the past 18 months keeping myself in check.  I have a ton of support around me (friends and family).  I now love eating well, it has a major impact on my and my family's health.

I try to keep the very real effects of eating well in the forefront of my mind.  My moods are more balanced, I have a ton of energy to keep up with my kids, I can focus better, I'm just an all-around better person when I'm treating myself well.  I wouldn't feed my 18 month old, nor my 3 year old some of the crap I used to put in my face, why would I do that to a growing fetus?

I don't know if any of this resonates with you.  I hope that you can find someone who is in your similar situation.  :)   I know your issue is geared more toward portion size, but like I said, I know that I'm eating whole, un-processed foods and getting enough calories and nutrients.  I haven't changed my portion sizes at all.

Do you think you could find an OB who has experience with women who are LBWLS and pregnant?

  • I had Gastric Bypass in April 2009 and have lost 125lbs.  Due to my surgery I am not physically able to eat more than 5-6oz at a time and have to be very careful of what I intake because i get sick very easily.

Being pregnant has only made my nausea 100x worse and trying to eat crackers and small frequent meals has been very hard.  I have been relying on protein shakes to help with my nutrition.

Congratulations to you on your weight-loss!

  • Thanks! Yes it does resonate!

I am hoping to find a Dr who is well acquainted with the LB however, I'll have to drive 2 hours to go there for each appt. Its not a big deal while being pregnant, I just worry about the labor  part haha.

The sea-saw I am on with the LB now is that it will get tight on me some days but my brain is still saying.. YO EAT SOMETHING! I'll go to eat and I'm barely getting it down. Bread is ROUGH and I'm craving carbs like crazy and the one thing that I know goes down is cheetos.. BAD BAD BAD..i've also had this want for grape soda.. I normally dont drink soda.. not because the band doesnt like it but because if im going to get some calories in, I've really come to a mind set of not wanting to drink my calories.. that and when I used to be a heavy soda drinker, it really did a job on my teeth. Before I'd after maybe a soda every couple of weeks and usually like a half a can.. in the past few days i've had 4.. i know this is something that I can control, but im  struggling with WANTING to control it lol

Watching the scale creep up will be interesting as I am a scale-a-holic and weight every day..Its going to be a daily battle of.. I will gain weight, and it will b ok.

I almost wish I was restricted to the 5-6 oz! Congrats to you too!

Me too!!  The OB I need to see for a VBA2C is nearly 2 hours away.  It will be fine for appts, but you're right.  I do worry about going into labor and having to drive that.  Good luck!!  I hope that you find a great balance, and that your weight gain is reinforced by your OB so that you don't drive yourself batty focusing strictly on the scale.  I totally know how that feels.
