Re: Riviera maya.. Obviously nbr
I am a SUPER nervous person and everyone told us this before we went. We just made sure not to leave the resort without a guide. It ended up being fine and we made it back alive. Haha... the worst part was getting attacked at the airport upon arrival to Mexico by "the sharks". If anyone has been to the airport there, you know what I'm talking about.

go to St. John USVI instead!
I very much disagree. My husband covers the Caribbean for his territory and we travel to Mexico several times a year. I have never once felt unsafe, seen a gun on someone other than a cop, or even seen drugs.
I love, love, love the Palace resorts. We have stayed at the Moon Palace, Moon Grand (same resort, just one side is pricier because the rooms are nicer), Sun Palace (couples only), Playa Car Palace, Adventura Spa Palace (It's now a Hard Rock) and DH has stayed at the Beach Palace for work. I'd go back to any of them but Sun. It is all inclusive (outside of airfare). If you use a membership (and you will find them all over the internet - or PM me and I'll sell you one of mine - we keep buying more), you get roundtrip transpo from the airport in a van, usually stocked with drinks. You get $1500 resort credit - which you can use at the spa, for golf, snorkeling, trips to pyramids, water parks, horse back riding, zip lines, swimming with dolphins, sunset cruises, really good wines, and photo sessions on the beach (there may be more, I can't remember - it also changes between the resort and the year). The food is good for the most part. Each resort has different restaurants, and you have to ask the people who have been there for a few days which ones they like best. The restaurants all change. It's a buffet breakfast (we got used to ordering room service breakfast, honestly, every day), a buffet lunch, but with hot grill and some menu items), and ala carte dinner. They have shows every night which are fabulous - you think they are cheesy, but I love them - especially the Michael Jackson show. You also get free non-motorized water activities. With the membership, you also get a massage and a mani/pedi. And ocean front rooms. The rooms are really nice - everyone has a balcony, some with hammocks, a whirlpool, comfortable beds, a fully stocked bar (and you can call if you run out of anything), and they smell amazing. If you give the maids a $1, they make animals out of the towels.
The drinks are not watered down and if you tell them exactly what you want, they make it that way. If you ask for a tequila, yeah, they will give you the bottom shelf, but if you say, I want a Don Julio, they make it that way. I taught everyone there last year about mimosas with Grand Marnier. I think we drank Moon Palace out of Grand Marnier. There is 24 hour room service and we used it almost every single night. The french fries there are to die for. They make them out of unicorns and fairies and sprinkle them with magic. I can't even begin to discuss the sliders. We have ordered multiple orders of them in one night. The club sandwich is also a piece of heaven. My husband just reminded me about their vanilla ice cream. I have never tasted anything so amazing in my entire life. One night, I ate five bowls of it. I can't even talk about it anymore. I'm crying.
I think the most we paid for high season was $2,600 for both of us. You will find places, all inclusive, that are much less, but the service, quality of food, location, excursions, and resort credit can't match Palace. They do not expect tips, do not ask for them, and do not treat you badly if you don't tip them. That being said, we always bring $100 in singles and that's usually ALL we spend that week. (Outside of chotsky, which I always manage to spend a lot on). My inlaws have used our membership twice, and thought they would save money and go somewhere else this year and were pretty disappointed.
Oh, and you can go to any Palace resort you want while you are there. So, if you are staying at Sun Palace and want to go to Moon Palace for the day, they usually have a bus (and they are nice buses) that will take you there in the morning and bring you back at night. You can eat at any of the restaurants in any of the resorts with your all inclusive package. We take day trips to the other ones all the time.
The only draw back is they sell time shares and beg you to buy one. I'm glad we did, we use it a lot, but its not for everyone. You can tell them you don't want to go, but we always do and end up with a free something or other. You just have to tell them no.
