Received a diaper genie at my shower. Debating whether to return it and just use a regular trash can with a lid (especially since we're considering doing cloth diapers once baby gets a little bigger.) Advice please.

Re: Diaper Disposal System
I received one at DD's shower, unregistered for, which I decided to keep and it turned into a very useful product for me.
If you have tons of other necessities still to purchase on your registry, then perhaps take that back and use that credit to get stuff you still need. But since you already got it, I'd keep it. I liked having a Diaper Genie - a contained place to keep smelly diapers is a pretty handy invention, and its nice not to have to empty it every day like you would a garbage can.
I had a love/hate relationship with my diaper genie. Yeah it was convenient to drop in the dirty diapers without having to worry about the stink, but it was TOO convenient and never changed the bags inside as often as I should have; it made it really easy to forget about. Once I couldn't stuff any more diapers in, I'd pull out this HUGE diaper sausage. I laughed it was so ridiculous. And disgusting at the same time.
I didn't register for one this time. I'll make do with a small garbage can with lid and empty it every night.
That made me laugh a lot.
Hummm...
We are going with cloth diapers from the get go so I would suggest that you just return the genie and get the things you still need on your registry.
I was at a few resale shops this weekend... holy cow they must have had 15+ of those things at each of the stores. So worse come to worse if down the road you REALLY want one, you can pick one up at the resale shop for really cheap to try it out.
Best of luck on your decision.

FTM, so take my advice with a grain of salt, but if you are possibly planning to cloth diaper later, and if you consider the cost of the cartridges you need for the Diaper Genie, I'd say you're probably better off getting a regular garbage can.
I'm CD-ing, and we bought a normal garbage can that we are lining with a pail liner. If you have a normal garbage can for disposable diapers, then decide to cloth diaper, you won't have an extra useless item hanging around your house because you can just put a pail liner in the garbage can you already have!
