Breastfeeding

16 Month old biting every time he nurses

My little guy has always been great at nursing... until the last week or so.  He's been biting lately.  He will suck once or twice, then bite me. The only way I can get milk in him is to put pumped milk in a bottle.  He keeps asking for milk, then biting me again.

Is this just a phase he'll get over? I pull him off, tell him biting is bad, it hurts Mommy and then let him try again and he'll do the same thing.  I am at my wits end - I'm uncomfortably full, and he's acting pretty frantic for the milk, so we are both in tears.

The milk is coming just fine if I pump, so it's not like he's having problems getting the milk. Night time feedings when he's asleep are fine.

Sorry for the ramble, I'm exhausted and not being very clear I'm sure.

  • Sounds mean but you've got to make it just as uncomfortable for him. Pull him into your breast or pinch his nose every time, so he gets the idea its not cool.

  • Pull him off and put him down and let him cry and tell him no! It only took a few times before my kids learned and they were much younger.

Do you offer sippy cups of milk?? At that age he may be to distracted or active to want to sit still and nurse. Just a thought I've haven't nursed past a year yet so I don't know.

  • Does he have any teeth coming in?  My LO does this every time she teeths badly.  I just pull her off, and stop nursing.  Then I try again a few minutes later.  I try to give her things she can bite on like cold ice cream, or those tubes of yogurt frozen...it helps!
  • He actually nursed without biting a couple of times today.  Of course he bit other times so its a work in process.

It looks like he has a new tooth on the bottom that just pushed through, so that might have been part of it.

Last night was the first time I was worried we'd stop nursing before he was done with the milk.  Thanks to everyone who replied.
