Babies: 6 - 9 Months

share your feeding schedule for solids and breastfeeding

my daughter  is 8 months old and was only getting one meal of solids at lunch time. i want to introduce more solid meals but unsure how to go about it. current schedule:

5am     nurse

8am     5-6 oz milk at sitter

12pm    fruit or veggie with  little cereal mixed

3pm      5-6 oz milk at sitter

 5/6      nurse

8pm      sometimes nurse before bed

should i squeeze in a solid meal between 5 and 8am?  and/or replace  5/6 pm with solids and just nurse before bed?

will this effect  my milk supply so that she won't get enough at nursing?

Re: share your feeding schedule for solids and breastfeeding

  • We watched baby's cues and patterns for a week or so, then we developed this schedule around his needs.  It has been AWESOME.  I never thought I was a "schedule person" till we found one that worked with our little man.  Here it is:

    8:00  Up & Nurse

    9:00 Solids

    10:00 Nap

    12:00 Nurse

    1:00 Solids

    2:00 Nap

    4:00 Nurse

    5:00 Solids

    6:00 Mini-nap (25-35 mins)

    7:45 Bath

    8:00 Nurse

8:30 Baby falls asleep on his own in his crib, most nights

MOTN feeds vary, usually 1-2 times

The most important thing is to offer solids after nursing/bottle, so that baby gets most of his nutrition from milk.  Our schedule is flexible of course - it's basically what happens every day, but I always follow baby's cues.

  • 7:00 am Nurse

    9:00 am Nurse then nap

12:00 Nurse then 1-2 oz puree veggie

    2:30 Nurse then nap

5:00 Nurse then 1-2 oz puree fruit

Bedtime Routine starts at 7 and ends with a nursing session

He gets a few different finger foods through out the day sometimes.  Today he had a few small pieces of banana in addition.

  • LO is 9 months old. She is exclusively breastfed (as in no formula).. She gets 3 solid meals a day plus at least 5 nursings a day. I work full time, so I pump 2-3 times per day at the office so she can take bottles during the week.

    6:30(ish) - wake and nurse

8am - two TBS oatmeal plus 1 TBS diced fruit (peaches/apricots/etc.)

    10am - nap

    11am - nurse or 4oz bottle

12pm - two TBS oatmeal, 2 TBS pureed fruit, and 1 TBS finger food (cheerios/puffs/avocado/etc)

    2pm - nurse or bottle

    3pm - nap

    4:30/5pm - nurse or bottle

    6pm - 1TBS protein, 2TBS pureed veggies, 1TBS diced fruit

    7pm - nurse and bedtime

Your LO needs the extra calories now, so adding in the extra solids is what she needs. I haven't noticed a drop in my milk supply. my DD nurses the same amount as she always has. Our pediatrician actually suggested adding in an extra snack in the day b/c my DD is still waking in the middle of the night to nurse.

My LO is 7mo too.  This is pretty much our schedule only sleeps through the night 6:30p-7:30a and doesn't have the mini nap, only 2 naps.

  • Your LO goes pretty long during the day without nursing! My LO is 8 months, he nurses at least 5 to 6 times a day and gets solids 2 times a day for breakfast and dinner. I offer solids inbetween nursing sessions because I don't want him to drop any feeds. I'm going to start to add solids for lunch, but again, inbetween nursing sessions. Good luck!
  • I absolutely do not want to replace any milk. My sister in law was babysitting primarily and was going off feeding cues, and was alternating milk and solids. But i knew we were going about this wrong. On the weekend she never went over 4 hours without nursing.  I didnt have and family or friends who have breastfed to get any tips, and I understand now, thank you for sharing! I am going to have sitters offer her solids about 1 hour after milk and hope that her naps fit in between :-)
