If you have your LO in a playgroup how was it established? Were you friends before? I would like to get involved with a playgroup for DS but I don't have any friends with children around his age. Any advice is appreciated!
I used meetup.com. The people were complete strangers, but we have met some very nice people. I only go to the ones in public places if I don't know anyone (story time at the library, playgrounds, etc).

I just get together with a few friends that have kids around the same age. It will be easier when they get a little older and can interact more when summer comes along, so we can go on walks and to the park other outside things. I am also on a meetup website, but haven't gone to any yet. A lot are during the day I'm a teacher so that is hard, but I plan on going to a few this summer.
meetup.com is great, but you should also ask around to see if your neighborhood has a facebook page or a listserve. My neighborhood has both, and it's been a great way to meet other moms. Also, I don't know if you are a SAHM or not, but I've met some great people through my kids' daycare.
ETA: also, once the weather gets better, you can meet other moms at local parks/playgrounds.
An acquaintance found out I was SAH and invited me to the play group she goes to. She was the only one I knew to begin with, but it's a small-ish group so I became comfortable with the others fairly quickly. I would also suggest checking facebook. Our group has a page (it's closed, but not private, so it shows up in searches).
I also used meetup.com since we were new to the area and didn't have any friends/family here. The people were complete strangers and it was awkward at first, but we have met some really nice people.
I found my local group on facebook. Another group in the area has a meetup. I would also suggest just googling for play groups in your area. When we moved, I made the decision to go to a non mobile baby's get together when L was 4 months old and I met some of my good friends there. I also attend other events that are put on by the mothering group to try to continue to meet new people. Good luck!
