Clomid and Twins

I am almost 38, and my Dr gave me Clomid because I'm not ovulating every month. My sister has twins thanks to Clomid. What are my chances of having twins as well? I do not think I can handle twins.

I think I remember reading that the chance is about 8-10%. I would definitely discuss this concern with your RE, because some centers like mine do multiple fetal reduction. That freaks me out way too much to even consider that, but then again, I would die for twins or triplets.

This. I can't remember the numbers, but clomid only slightly increases your odds for twins. While I definitely am not hoping for twins (I am a twin and know first hand the difficulties of raising twins), at this point I would count my blessings if I ended up with twins.

Also, you should definitely make sure you are properly monitored while taking clomid. There are worse things that can happen when taking clomid unmonitored than getting pregnant with twins.

I'm hoping that since your Dr. handed out clomid to you, that you have had proper testing done beforehand.Have you had an HSG? Clomid won't hep squat if you tubes are blocked.

Please get monitored on clomid. It's a serious drug.

I was lucky enough to have 3 follies last cycle...and my RE said there was a 5% chance of twins. We do have some MFI issues, but he didn't make me think that played into his number at all.

I agree with PPs, you need appropriate testing and monitoring.

There is slightly higher chance. I know it was under 10%. At this point I would kill for twins...any baby. My RE sat down with me and discussed the risks of multiples. You should have this convo with your RE.

This should have been covered by your doctor when they gave you the RX for Clomid. I think that mine told me ~10% chance. In addition to a verbal discussion of the risks, benefits and side effects I had to sign a page long consent on the same info and have it witnessed by my nurse.
Did you get your Clomid RX from an OB or RE?

This is something that I think is often confusing. There is a 8% chance of twins on clomid. But you have to remember that there is usually only a 20% chance you get pregnant at all. So that means, if you are pregnant then the chance of it being twins is more like 40%. And if you look at the PAIF board, I don't know that you'll see it that high (that 4 out of ten women have twins) but it is higher then one out of twenty (8% would be 1.6 out of twenty posters).

TICKER WARNING

I too had the exact same concern especially because I DO ovulate on my own every month without assistance. The month I conceived on clomid I had two mature follicles. Being worried I asked my fertility doctor about it again. He was so non chalant about it. His response: "more targets. More targets for hubby's sperm." He wasn't worried about twins at all. Like if hubby's sperm couldn't find a lonely old egg in there, giving them two would help. I'm pregnant with a singleton. Just make sure you are being constantly monitored. Good luck.
