another puree to table food transition post

I am a ftm...just wanted to throw that out there. DS will eat purees of all type and thickness, as long as there's no chunks. I've been worried about an over sensitive gag reflex. Any chunks will set it off. Well, the other day, I gave him toast, no gagging. The next day earths best blueberry waffle. ..he did great. The next day, cheerios...perfect. however, I have tried bananas, pears, melon and green beans...no go! I think he takes issue with picking up softer, mushy items. What can I do to help it along? What should I try next? I really could use some help and or advice please? I am excited to get him eating more than purees, puffs and yogurtbites. Wanna keep the momentum rolling. Any mums out there have LO with a dislike of picking up mushy? He still will gag with chunks spoon fed, but doesn't vomit everytime with them like before. are we seeing progress? I'm at a loss. Help!! TIA

  • We can't handle texture over here yet either, but have you tried rolling the mushier stuff in cheerio dust?  I have heard that makes it easier for them to pick the pieces up and that might entice him to eat more....

  • it sounds like the problem is more that it's slippery than the actual chunk itself. Like with a cheerio, you have more control moving it around your mouth, whereas with a peach chunk, it slips when you try to chomp down, and maybe slips to the back of the mouth. You can try the cheerio dust, or just stick with the no-so-slippery stuff for a little longer.

  • The gagging really isn't too much of a problem as long as he is not throwing up with it anymore. It is something that they slowly outgrow as they learn how to move things around in their mouth and control pushing it to the back of their throat. Some favorites of my LO that you might want to try: tiny bits of bagel w/cream cheese, cottage cheese w/ the purees, pasta lightly coated in breadcrumbs or marinara or mac-n-cheese, tiny bits of shredded chicken or chunks of soft fish, small bits of dried fruit like cherries or apricots. GL!

  • Thanks for the suggestions! Definitely will be trying all of them. If you through enough stuff at the wall, eventually something will stick. Hoping for the same in this situation. Lol. Thank you ladies!
