1yr old diet-- question

My DS currently is in daycare 4 days a week. His DCP has brought it to my attention that she does not think we are giving him enough protein. The DCP is a friend of Hs, so sometimes I feel that she gets a little over opinionated when it comes to DS so I don't know if I'm just too sensitive when she makes comments like this. I know she has his best interest at heart but sometimes it just seems that she oversteps, anyways my question is how much protein are your LOs eating?

We typically send for breakfast-lunch: full fat greek yogurt mixed with some sort of fruit puree, a cup of mixed veggies, and a cup of fruit of some sort. And then it varies from grilled cheese, lentils, wild rice and guacamole,PB& J, turkey and cheese sandwich, tuna, or mac and cheese.  Also she provides WCM for him throughout the day.

And at dinner he has whatever we are having which is some sort of meat, veggies, and a carbohydrate.

Her concern stems from the fact that she says he just never seems full, which is true in some sense- my mom says my DS eats one meal a day "all day" lol. Any advice would be appreciated!

Re: 1yr old diet-- question

  • Seems like enough protein to me.

  • That sounds pretty close to what DS eats on a daily basis. Actually he has cut down eating quite a bit in the last few weeks. Before though, he would eat the meal we gave him, and then come beg for food off our plates. He's consistently been in the 50th percentile for weight thought. I don't think there is a reason for concern. Does she know it is greek yogurt and not regular? I know a lot of people who don't know the protein difference in the yogurt.

  • He definitely sounds like he's a good eater. From the description you posted I believe he is getting enough protein for sure.

Thanks for the input ladies! I did explain to her that it was greek yogurt and the difference because that was something she thought I could leave out and switch for something with more protein. But this morning she mentioned it again to my H, so I don't know lol. So I'm just going to keep sending him with what I have been, and just smile and nod when she wants to give more advice!

Brayden is quite the eater and still in 50% for weight! The grocery bill should be interesting when he hits teenager years!

  • He sounds like he is getting plenty of protein.  Here is a link someone gave me that helped me, on here it says they only need 2 servings of protein.  Does he eat an afternoon snack?  Maybe you could send in one if he doesn't eat one already, otherwise his intake looks pretty similar to my DD.

  • It may seem to her as he's not getting enough protein, because it doesn't seem (to her maybe) that you're not feeding him enough meat.  However, protein is found in other sources, other than meat...eggs, cheese, milk, beans, nuts, whole grain, fish.  My ped said that "meat" at least 3 to 4 times a week is sufficient "meat" consumption at this age.  So, though most don't think of other sources of food for protein, there are ways for us and our kids to get protein rather than forcing them or ourselves to eat meat.  It sounds likes he's probably getting a sufficient amount of protein...according to the AAP a toddler needs 2 servings of protein a day...https://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/toddler/nutrition/Pages/Serving-Sizes-for-Toddlers.aspx?nfstatus=401&nftoken=00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000&nfstatusdescription=ERROR%3a+No+local+token

Ian's babysitter is one of "those" people too...she's very good with him and I really like her.  But, I've learned that I have to just smile and nod a lot to her.  She means well with some of the stuff that she says, and I appreciate it, but a lot of it is stuff that I already know, or know that it doesn't pertain to us.  And Ian has days that he seems like he just can't get enough food...it has nothing to do with his protein intake.  My kid would sit and eat meat all day long if I'd let him.

  • If she's seriously insisting on not giving him Greek yogurt because there's not enough protein then her opinion is worthless. Greek yogurt has plenty of protein and if she's so concerned about it then she should know that.

  • I would not want to hear it again, so I would ask H to educate her next time, nicely.  "The pediatrician said that...." You could fill in the blank above, or from my pediatrician - in today's society you would have to TRY to deprive your children of protein for there to be an issue.  Our diets are just structured so there is an over abundance of protein.

  • I said something to my dr about protein & she said that it isn't as important at this age as it is when our LOs get older.  I'm a vegetarian (dd is not), but I was just checking to make sure.

  • I tend to trust my DC person. A few times we've asked them to do something our way only to realize later that the DC way made more sense. I know our ladies know what they are talking about. They also asked me to bring for food for DD and so we've really increased it lately. I think she just plays so hard all day that she needs more food. Her lunch yesterday included: cubed turkey, mango slices, applesauce, cereal bar, yogurt melts, beans and cheese and three bottles of milk. It's a big sack of food, but she eats every morsel and still has a good dinner appetite.

  • It sounds like you give plenty of protein, and your DCP probably doesn't realize that meat is not the only source of protein.  If he's not full enough after meals, that's a problem to address.  Maybe send larger meals?

  • Your child eats more than my 2.5 yo does. Haha. And, we are vegetarian. My kids have always been healthy and never had iron or protein deficiencies. In fact, the protein suggestion is 16g per day for a 1 year old. So, if your kiddo is drinking two cups of WCM, he's getting "adequate" protein. Greek yogurt, meat, eggs, cheese, etc just add to that. I think you just have a good eater.
