homemade laundry detergent- supposed to be this chunky?

I know they said the liquid laundry detergent wouldn't really be as runny as the store-bought kind, but of what consistency should it be exactly?  My batch's texture turned out to be thicker than a can of cranberry sauce.  Not matter how much I stir it it doesn't seem to break apart well, making it difficult to measure & dispense.

I was going to just scoop it straight out of the 5-gallon bucket, is this why they suggest putting it in smaller containers & shaking before pouring?  Or should I water it down even further as some recipes suggested?

  • Sorry, my homemade detergent is in powder form so I can help you there. Maybe some other moms here have a suggestion for you.

P.S. Your siggy pic is adorable!

We had the same problem with homemade liquid detergent, borax is a thickener and yeah it was a pain to dispense.  We mostly just use powder now.  In the past though when we tried to do the liquid detergent we would add water, but also shake it up on laundry day because the water and soap would separate.

Hmmm...maybe if I put less borax in next time?  I made powdered before, but wanted to try liquid because it took so long to make the powdered- I made the bulk version of the recipe.  I work full-time so I try to mass produce as many things as I can to save time in the long run :)

Have you tried using a food processor to grind the soap?  It is so much easier and quicker and it cleans out really easily since it is soap.

  • Mine did the SAME thing and I ended up pouring out the entire bucket because I just couldn't get it to thin out.  I have since found a recipe that uses Dr. Bronners rather than a bar of soap and it has stayed MUCH more watery.  It's all we use now.  It still contains borax and washing soda, but the soap is liquid instead of bar.

  • If it is the same recipe as mine, you are supposed to fill a smaller container half full of the soap mix and then add half water. Shake, shake, shake. We keep ours in a Tide dispenser with a spout and it works pretty well. I still have to shake it up from time to time.
