Who is doing the circumcision?

This isn't to debate whether you are circumcising; I'm just curious, for those who are, who is doing yours? My OB said she can do this in the hospital, or if baby is small, she can do it at a follow up appointment in her office. My pediatrician also offers this service in her office (she doesnt have privileges at the hospital where we're delivering). Does anyone know whether there is a benefit of one scenario over the other? For example, do you think it would be good to just get it over with in the hospital as long as baby is big and healthy enough? Or do you think by that time baby will have been through enough and taking care if this a week or two later makes most sense? And if doing it later, would it be better to have the doc who will be caring for him do it? I honestly have no idea...

Re: Who is doing the circumcision?

  • Both of my boys were circumcised in the hospital after birth. It was reassuring that they'd see the ped a few days later. We are getting LO circumcised in the hospital as well.

  • My friend who has a son read that circumcision right away can hurt your chances to BF, so she opted to do it a couple weeks later.  IMO, people have been doing immediate circumcisions for years and have been able to BF, so we will be doing it in the hospital.  I would rather have it done and get it over with then delay it longer.

  • The pedi at the hospital suggested we wait and have it taken care of weeks later. We went with his advice and actually took DS to a pediatric urologist to have the procedure done.

  • Were doing it at the hospital, too. My OB does it the day after delivery and I am okay with that.

  • My hospital said it will be my OB in the hospital. They said that's preferable to a pediatrician or someone because your OB really is a surgeon first and foremost.
I also want it done right away so that its done and he can heal and we can move on.

  • This is a great question as I can see the arguments on both sides.  I'm very curious to read more answers.

  • I'm curious about this too.  I've been told by friends that we should wait 2 weeks because of breastfeeding also, but I'm not sure it really matters that much.  I've heard that urologists do a better job, but I'm not sure about that either.  I'm planning to ask my doc at the next appointment what they usually do.

  • Last August, the American Academy of Pediatrics announced its first major shift on circumcision in more than a decade, concluding that the health benefits of the procedure clearly outweigh any risks. Check out NPR coverage or the AAP site for more information.

  • I'm having a difficult time with this. If our LO still has kidney issues and we have to see a pediatric urologist due to his kidney I will likely have the urologist perform the circumcision.

We have also discussed looking into finding a Mohel to perform the circumcision even though we are not Jewish.

  • We will be having LO circusized in the hospital. It will be the easiest solution for us since he will be seeing his pediatrician 2 to 4 days after we are released, and she can make sure everything is healing perfectly.
  • We are still very much on the fence with this for multiple reasons but I think if we do decide to go ahead with it we will use a urologist to perform the procedure.

EDIT Assuming you are real, I think you missed the point of your link and the post.

I didn't have it done for my boys but my relative who had her son done had it done at the hospital. She was still able to breastfeed well.

  • Blerg. Long day hospital right away for us!
  • We're still undecided,  but I've read many times that it's best to wait at least a week for clotting factors. But I've read a couple of places say it's best within 48 hours because babies bleed less. The two contradict each other.

I think *if8 we do it, we'll lean towards doing it later, but I don't know by who.

  • Due to religion we are.

  • We will do it at hospital with the ob on duty that day. That makes me nervous but the other option is waiting three months and have it done by a urologist. I don't want to wait that long.
  • DS was born on 9/9 and was circumsiced by the ob on 9/11 a few hours before we left the hospital.  The ob usually does it because they are a surgeon.  DS took the boob like a champ, but everyone is different.  Planning on doing the same with ds2.
  • The on call OB did DS's circ the day after he was born. He had no problems breastfeeding and was able to be seen by a pedi in the hospital then at his well visits to make sure it was healing.

  • OB did it for our son prior to dc home from the hospital.
  • I am having a girl this time, however, my son was circumcised at the hospital by my OB. He would not stop bleeding and we had to stay an extra night (this came after a week in the NICU, so it was not done immediately.) Ultimately, he had to have a circ revision 6 months later by a urologist because his foreskin grew back on one side.

According to my pediatrician, it's better to have a urologist perform the circ because they actually follow-up on their work. An OB may be a surgeon, but they perform the circ and never see the patient to follow up and really have no idea how well they performed the procedure.

Anyway, that's my experience and my .02?.

  • It is our hospital's policy to have your OB do it, so that is what we did with DS.

  • I would suggest you also check with your insurance, some insurance companies will only cover them in the hospital, that is if they cover them at all. Just a little food for thought :)
  • No one had mentioned ins til the last post. Id call and check on that. If one place is covered and not the other, thats the way i'd go as it costs 300 to 400 in my area. We had my sons done in the hospital which was nice because then it was done with and then the at home nurse could check it plus his newborn check up they looked at it. I breastfed for a year and had no issues after the circ
  • My OB usually does the procedure, but wasn't comfortable doing DS's due to a possible anatomical issue. We ended up going to a dr who only does circs when he was 6w. I'm hoping that with this LO my OB will be able to do it in the hospital.

  • I don't think its better one way or another to have the OB or pedi do it. In my case its cheaper to have the OB do it in the hospital. I have one hospital admittance copay for the baby and I for everything. So if I have it done while at the hospital with the OB its covered under that one copay.

  • We will be having a mohel do it on the 8th day according to religious tradition, assuming everything is medically cleared for the procedure.  The mohel we would like to use is an OB by trade who does the religious circumscion on the side.

According to my Bradley instructor (sorry, I don't have a link or a citation), the ideal time for circumscision is on the 8th day, which, coincidentally (?) is what is required by the Torah.

It is possible to have a mohel do it in your home at any time even if you are not Jewish, but insurance usually will not cover it.

  • I think that is the best way, otherwise in the hospital.
  • My son was done two weeks later because he was discharged from a different hospital than I was (he went across the street to childrens hospital) and he was discharged on a Sunday when there was no doctor to do it. I would rather do it in the hospital as soon as possible just because the whole hearing the baby crying and seeing the aftermath mess on a table in the doctors office was hard for us. Also it would all be under the one hospital bill so it might be better for insurance. <--That last part is just a guess.

This, our insurance company will only pay for the procedure if it's done in the same hospital stay as the birth. They consider it cosmetic.

  • To me it doesnt matter who does it, as long as they offer the method i prefer. My ob actually explained to me that general practice from the east coast to the west coast of the untitled states differs ( she recently moved to Washington state from New York.) On the east coast, your ob will be more likely to perform the procedure, but if u live on the west coast your pediatrician will more than likely do it at your 2 week appointment.  Also on a different topic, I am waiting until 2 week appointment to have it done because there is a better chance of the blood clotting properly after the baby is 7 days old.

Is this like a continuation of the whole homebirth craze?

We are having girls this time but both boys (born in military hospitals) had it done the day after birth by the neonatal pediatrician.  I have never heard that it could interfere with BFing until this thread; I certainly didn't have any problems with it.  Like others said, having it done at the hospital they were checked before we left and then a day or two later at their first appointment.
