How to sit comfortably at a desk?

So, how are you desk jockey moms working these days? Leaning back in my chair with my feet up on a box seems to be the only semi-comfortable position, but it strains my lower back reaching forward to the keyboard. Sitting up straight doesn't work cause I can't roll my chair in close enough without my belly bumping the desk. When I can get away with it, sitting indian style in my chair sort of works (my belly can drop low in the space between my legs), but its far from professional/lady like particularly since I'm relying on maternity dresses most days now. Any other suggestions to tough it out the next 6 weeks? I didn't feel this uncomfortable so early last time.

Re: How to sit comfortably at a desk?

  • I don't have much advice.  Thankfully, my bump isn't too bothersome yet, but sitting seems to compress my spine enough to have LO constantly straining and kicking against my ribs, which drives me crazy.  It is going to be a long 7 more weeks for me as well.

  • I am currently sitting indian style myself.  It is a combo of that, standing with my laptop on a bookcase, so I can work while standing for a while, then back to different sitting positions.  I also switch out to a ball throughout the day as well.  I am in leggings and tunics now, just so I can sit easier!

  • I'm struggling with this as well.  I try to keep my mouse and keyboard close to the edge, but my vision has changed and my contacts aren't working like they used to so I find myself leaning in all the time.  My feet I either keep on a box or cross-legged.  I never wear skirts or dresses until summer though.

Do you have/can you bring an exercise ball?

I am borrowing one from a co-worker to give it a try.  It's only been a few minutes but so far so good.  I have a feeling its still going to hurt my lower back though.  There seems to be no relief other than laying for that.

Pick up a wireless keyboard or request it from your IT department.

I recline with my feet up and pull my wireless keyboard to the very edge of my desk.  Tangible documents that I'm working on are to the right or left of me or between my keyboard and my PC.

My company already has wireless keyboard and mice, so this is also how I'm sitting. I have a garbage can flipped over under my desk for my feet, and sometimes I put a sweatshirt rolled up behind my lower back.

I do, I actually sat on that a lot at the end of my last pg at home.  But I think the ball would be too low to be able to comfortably type and be looking up at my moniotr (ie, my desk too high, or the ball too small).  I may get a few strange looks from co-workers, but if its more comfortable, I'm all for trying it!

  • Thankfully I'm part time now so only have to deal with 3-5 hours max a day.   However, it SUCKS.   I am almost laying in my chair because if I sit up straight I can't breathe.

No advice, just letting you know misery loves company :)

  • i've found that a throw pillow i brought from home placed down by the small of my back has really helped... i cant even recline my feet up unless i am almost completely laid back! the countdown is ON!
  • Bouncy Ball... when I am stuck studying at my desk for hours, the chair is just too uncomfortable. The bouncy ball helps stretch things out for a little bit before returning to the chair.

  • Exercise ball for sure. Sit with your hips forward, it feels like heaven. Plus it helps to open the pelvis and help the baby's head move down double bonus!

I had to pull my keyboard and monitor and stand to the edge of the desk so its closer to me. I then roll my chair as close as I can till Im about an inch away from my bump. I either sit up, sit indian style or put my feet up and lean back. I change position a lot during the day.

This, there doesn't seem to be one position that is continuously comfortable. I find myself sitting with one foot tucked underneath me. I'm constantly trying to pull the keyboard closer so I can recline haha.
