2nd Trimester

Old Navy question

Some of my clothes (particularly the dresser stuff) are starting to get a little uncomfortable, but I'm still far from needing maternity wear. I needed something to get me through until 1) I'm larger and 2) the weather warms up.

I bought a bunch of non maternity dresses from ON during their Spring is in the Air sale. I don't generally buy much ON for myself so I ordered a mix of sizes and some of it is just way too big.

I know a lot of what I buy for DD shrinks. I can't decide if I should wash it with hopes that it sinks or if I should just return it for a smaller size/petite size.

Anyone who shops at ON have a suggestion?

Re: Old Navy question

  • From my experience, a bunch of their stuff shrinks. My mom bought me enough maternity wear to get me through the century and I was so happy thinking it would get me all the way til the end. I washed everything and pretty much the only things that didn't shrink were the yoga pants.

I think I'd stick with the larger size but it all probably depends on your body shape. You may grow into it eventually as you get further along.

  • I always dry my clothes on low to avoid this. If you are worried it is too big and you wont be able to wear it I would return for a smaller size.

I bought a bunch of cute maternity stuff from ON a few weeks ago. They had a huge 40% off sale. I am not quite that big yet, but the stuff is super comfy. You could also look at buying some maxi-fold over skirts which are loose and you could likely wear the whole pregnancy and still be able to use after the baby is born.

I bought a bunch of summer stuff during that sale, too. I tried it on before taking the tags off and I'm just plain swimming in it. DH laughed and said he couldn't believe it was ever going to actually fit.

The one dress is long. It's ill fitting because it's all out of proportion. Unfortunately it's not available in a petite (probably why I didn't buy a petite in the first place). My choices are hope it shrinks or just return it...

  • Yeah I am almost 14 weeks so right now I just look like a chubster lol. But I know once I get further along it will probably be ok. I am not even at the half way point. The shirts are great for sleeping though.

This.  To me their stuff runs huge but I've never noticed it shrink much.

  • I've found some things fit nicely there and some just don't. I actually have found in Maternity I wear a bigger (actually more normal size) than I do typically at ON. I can fit into smalls and extra smalls in the regular stuff, but I have been getting mediums in maternity bcI don't want them to be so tight. I think it is trial and error and some stuff does definitely shrink. If it is giant, I would return it for a smaller size. If it is just a bit loose, throw it in the dryer.

  • Man, for me, ON is all over the place. Sizing isn't consistent, nor is quality or shrinkage.  But for the price, and every once in awhile, some of the stuff is GOLD...it's just super-unpredictable.  I try to never use the dryer on any of their stuff.

I just bought a couple pairs of their maternity jeans and had to go a size up. With shirts and looser dresses, I didn't mind going a size up because I can just stick a tank top underneath or dress it up with a belt or something. T-shirts I stayed pretty much true to size, I just fill them out better now with my boobs :)

  • I used to work there & have a LOT of their stuff. DO NOT WASH before you decide to return! ON will not take back clothes that have been washed unless the shrinkage is major. Even then it's only with manager approval. (clothes that have been washed cannot be resold due to possible allergic reactions) Very little of what I have bought has shrunk. Jeans tend to run big & have a lot of stretch. I usually go down 1 to 3 sizes. The pants should be super tight when zipped & buttoned or they will loosen up too much within a couple hours. Woven shirts tend to run very big in the shoulders sometimes short in length. These will be the shirts with the biggest chance to shrink and fit strange. Over all if it doesn't fit right now if won't fit better in the future.

  • ON's a great place to go if you want to stock up on cheap basics like T-shirts or tank tops. They can be a little inconsistent in size, so be sure to try them on before, but you can't go wrong with the prices. They've got a great clearance rack, too, although if you're any size between XS and XXL you've got to move quickly. I found a cute maxi dress there in my size for $7.49, perfect for me as I'm due in July. I haven't had as much luck with their maternity jeans, though. I have a pair of denim capris that constantly feel like they're about to fall off.

In my experience, I've had a few things that shrank, mainly shirts, but nothing like a whole size. If they're too big, I'd just take them back.
