Babies: 9 - 12 Months

::sigh:: I am the worst gift giver

I seriously suck at getting presents for people.  One year I got my mom a plant for Christmas.  At the time it seemed like a good idea, but looking back on it, it wasn't so great...

DH already has all of his gifts picked out.  I still have my mom's, half of my dad's present, and my 27 year old brother's presents left to go. Oh, and all of DS's presents, but he's actually easy.

What are you getting your parents?  What would you get your 27 year old brother that has every movie known to mankind, doesn't like t-shirts or sweatshirts, and has no real interests?

I got my dad a subscription to National Geographic, but I need something physical to give to him on the actual day.  I was thinking of just picking up the December issue and putting a note inside?

**Edit** I also still need to pick something out for DH too!

  • I get my mom gift certificates to the place where she gets her hair cut and to QVC, where she loves to shop.

My dad and I aren't close, so I barely try with him. And he has a ton of money, so he really doesn't need much. He does like to garden, so one year I got him a GC for Breck's Bulbs and he likes to cook, so I got him some spices from Penzey's.

Your brother - how about iTunes gift cards?

  • My parents (dad & stepmom) we got them a gift card to Texas Roadhouse.  They have everthing and enjoy going out to dinner.

IL we got them a digital picture frame at Target.  It was a great deal on black Friday.

My mom is getting a Grandkids picture frame and some birdhouses for her yard.  She is really into that kind of stuff.

  • When in doubt, those that you don't know what to get, make a donation in their name to a charity of some sort.
  • You could get your bro a gift cert to a local movie theater, since he's into movies? And for the parents, how about a gift cert to a local restaurant they like?

  • I just sent an email to my parents and brother asking what they want.  So it won't be an exciting surprise, but at least they'll like what they get.  My brother actually asked for a toaster, which is weird.  He's 38, and doesn't have a toaster?

I'm also buying my parents each a pair of cashmere socks.  They never would buy a little luxury like this for themselves.

  • Visa gift card for your bro.

I am giving my parents a framed photo of me and the baby. That is what they asked for.

  • Thanks for the suggestions.  My family is annoying to shop for!  Gift cards/certificates are frowned upon because they aren't creative, but when you ask what someone wants, they always say something stupid like "nothing".  Oh, but my mom asks for a happy Christmas.  I'm about to print off a certificate that says "here is your gift of happiness" for my mom and put it in her stocking...

That would probably go over as well as the plant did, I think...

  • My family also frowns upon giftcards, because it does not take a lot of thought to purchase a GC for someone. And it's supposed to be the thought that counts.  However, I think my mom is treating Christmas too much like she's a child.  She made a wish list and emailed it to us.

One year, I did make things for my mother, basically shelves from Michael's.  Could you do something like that?  Decorate a frame with a picture of the baby in it?  Or a Snapfish/Shutterfly calendar? A good novel?  Ooh, could you get your brother some movie posters?

Oh, and LOL on your stocking stuffer idea.  I think you should do that in addition to a regular gift.
