Babies: 3 - 6 Months

laughing

When did you first hear your baby laugh?  My pedi asked me if she was laughing at her 4 month check up last week and seemed a bit surprised when I said she hasn't yet.  He asked if she was vocalizing and I said yes, but all she says is aaaahhh's. He is going to do a hearing test at here 6 month check up to be sure because she also doesn't look at anyone when you talk to here.  Should I be concerned that the lack of laugh could be something more serious?

Re: laughing

  • Slightly different as my LO is vocalizing a lot and looks at you intently when you talk - but she has laughed ... maybe twice.. and she's just over five months.

  • My son is 16 weeks and giggled for the first time maybe two weeks ago. He doesn't always laugh but there are specific things I can do to get a chuckle out of him. I wouldn't worry yet. Babies all develop at their own pace. See what the hearing test brings.
  • I don't know that the lack of her laughing would be my concern. I would be concerned about her not looking toward noises people talking and only vocalizing "ahhh". I think it is a very good idea to have the hearing screening done. Continue to pay attention to her vocalizations so that you can report them specifically if something comes up with the hearing screening. Good luck!! :

  • At his 4 month check up, my DS wasn't laughing a lot, but he did laugh some. Since his checkup though, he's been a crazy boy, screaming and laughing!

That said, I wouldn't be concerned until there was a definite answer. I personally don't think it is something to worry about right now, but I know from experience that you can't just tell someone not to worry and expect them to be fine. :)

    Good luck!

  • Started laughing about a week ago... so 3 1/2 months which I think is on the early side. She doesn't do it all the time, maybe every couple days and it's always at DS. She's been vocal since the very beginning. I wouldn't think anything of a baby who doesn't laugh by 4 months but I guess a hearing test can't do any harm.
