BF storage

For S(+)TM, what brand storage unit or storage bags have you found to be best for freezing breastmilk.

Also, any lessons learned you would like to share in regards to the process of storing breastmilk would be greatly appreciated as well.

  • Good point. I frequent 3rd tri and my monthly board so often I don't even think of specific boards.  Thanks for the reminder!  Big Smile

  • I just used the lansinoh bags and they worked well. I really suggest that whatever kind you get you find a kind that has the top of the bag shaped to form a spout, that way the milk pours easier into the bottle. And a kind that has the spot where you write the date away from where the milk is held. Sorry, don't really know how to explain it right. But the bags I used had the place to write above the ziploc zipper.

  • I loved the Lansinoh bags as well.

My advice is to freeze BM in different amounts (some 2 oz bags, some 6 oz bags, etc) and date the top and the amount with a sharpie.

Also, lay them down flat to freeze - not sitting upright! That way they'll be frozen like a brick, not like a ball. Much easier to store that way.

It also makes them much faster to defrost, stick them in a bowl of warm water and voila.

Also, I used the playtex drop-ins, and instead of using the actual drop-ins made for the bottle, I just thawed the milk in the storage bags, and then used the bag as the drop-in. Less waste, and no spillage if it doesn't pour out right!

Agree with all this.  Also, when you freeze them flat you can store them upright so the dates and amounts are visible--just like files in a filing cabinet--makes life much easier.

Also, I tried the Medela bags and hated them--it's hard to get the excess air out of the Medela bags, easy to do with the Lansinoh!

  • I always used the lansinoh bags without any issues.

I bought the gerber ones once and they were terrible. So many of them leaked, I basically bawled my eyes out.

  • Lansinoh seemed to be the best price and quality. The medela ones that you can use directly on your pump are more expensive and don't freeze as flat in my experience. You also want to measure the milk out in a bottle before pouring it in the bag b/c the lines on the bag that show how much milk are in it are not accurate at all. In the beginning I would freeze in 2 and 3oz increments and once baby got older I did larger amounts. I would freeze them flat and then store in a shoe box or gallon sized zip lock baggie and would make sure to use the oldest milk first and rotate it out that way.

I loved the Lansinoh bags. I froze them flat, then stood them up in order of date inside a big freezer bag, and labeled the bag with the date range. It helped to keep things organized. When I need to use some, I knew exactly which to pull first (in order to use the oldest first).
This exactly. I also thawed the milk in warm water in a bowl. After awhile, your baby will be drinking around the same amount each feeding so you'll know what quantity to freeze your milk in.

  • I liked the lansinoh bags too, but nuk was ok too and a little cheaper. I froze the bags flat too. The only thing I would add was that I cooled the milk in the fridge for a day before sticking it in the freezer.

  • Ditto everyone. Lansinoh all the way. I even figured out a way to pump directly into the bag. Lay flat to freeze to conserve space and for easy thawing.
