sttn

Also on BF board...

So I read all these posts about 5, 6, 7, 8 weeks old babes sttn... im wondering if they are all ff ? ... I am breastfeeding and wonder how much this really changes my lil guys ability to sttn... I dont want to supplement but im getting a lil jealous of the sleepers.... do u think its a developmental thing or formula vs. breast milk issue?

Re: sttn

  • Ff babies are more likely to sttn early but that's not always the case. Ds was bf and sttn at 7 weeks. Still waiting for dd!

  • It depends on the baby, not the food.  Yes, formula does digest slower so it will keep their tummy feeling fuller longer, but it's not going to make that big of a difference.  Many FF babies are still on an every 2-3 hr schedule.  Babies STTN when they're developmentally ready and there is a very wide range of when they're ready.

  • Henry is formula fed and is still only sleeping about 3 hours at a time. He is 8 weeks old.
I would love for him to sleep longer but I've actually adjusted to the sleeping schedule.
I can fall asleep relatively quickly after feeding him a bottle and putting him back down.

  • With my daughters, one was EBF and one was FF. they both started sleeping through the night around 6 weeks.

My husband could sleep 15 hours a day if I would let him. Maybe it's a generic predisposition to hibernation?
  • DD1 and DD2 both STTN by textbook definition (6 + hours) from very early ages, like 3 weeks.  They are both EBF.  So I don't think it has to do with what they're eating.  But I do have to say that they both also did/do a lot of cluster feeding in the evening before going down for the night.

  • DD is BF and she sleeps from about 12am to 7am... last night was from 1230am to 9am :)

  • My little one is EBF and gets her last bottle around 9p and doesn't wake again until 4:30a 5a. I think it really just depends on your little one. We do offer her am extra oz with that last bottle to help her go longer.
  • DS is FF and he just started the last three nights sleeping from 7 or 8pm to 4am.

    Henry Cavill...You're welcome!

  • DS#2 is EBF and he's been giving us 6+ hours of sleep since about 3 weeks.  He cluster feeds every hour from 6-10:30 but then sleeps until 5, sometimes 6 am.  Then he goes back to sleep for another 3-4 hrs.  During the day he feeds every 2 hours like clockwork.  DS#1 got pumped BM (he wouldn't nurse) and he was about the same, just no cluster feeding.  I think it really depends on the kid, and possibly some genetic predisposition.  DH and I love (and miss) our sleep and are champion sleepers, and our kids seem to be as well :)

My son is FF and has been from day one because I cannot BF (long story, but not the point).  He still wakes up every 3 hours like clockwork to eat.  He's 6 weeks old today.  We might occasionally get a 4 or 5 hour stretch when he first goes to sleep, but he is no where close to sttn yet. I think it's an individual kid issue, not a feeding issue.

i agree with this. Both my kids were/are FF. DD was a great sleeper where we'd only get up once a night (down by 9pm, up once then back to sleep till it was time to get up) and was sleeping through the night by 3 months. DS is the opposite up every three hours (sometimes more often than that) and it takes us at least an hour to get him back to sleep if he even goes back at all.

  • My DD has been sleeping 6 or 6 1/2hrs straight at night since 3wks. She's EBF, so guess it does just depend on baby. I never woke her up every couple hours to feed her though, she gains weight great.

  • My baby is bf and sleeps from 8:302:30.
It's different for every baby, and just because a baby sleeps longer now, doesn't mean it will continue, and vice versa.

  • My son is FF. He has been sleeping 6-7 hours a night for over a week now. He is 9 weeks old.

I don't know if being FF is why, but that's our story!

He isn't sleeping through my night, but let me tell you getting 4-5 hours of consecutive sleep is blissful, even if it's not the 7 I shoot for myself!

  • My DD (BFed) is 11 weeks and just started sleeping 5-6 hours at night this past week. I am beyond jealous of people who have had babies do that for a while.

  • Definitely depends on the baby. Both of my kids were/are FF. DD was doing the official six-hour stretch around 3-4 weeks. By 8 weeks she slept from her dreamfeed at 9:30 to 7:00am.

DS does not sleep as well. It's a real bummer for me. The most he has ever gone is five hours. Most nights it's about 4.5-5 hours.
