High-Risk Pregnancy

Lurking...PAI-1 Question

I've been told bc I have PAI-1, when I get pregnant again I'll have to be on blood thinner injections the first trimester.  I currently take baby asprin while stimming (Follistim injections)/prepping for IUI.  Just wondering if PAI-1 makes you high risk?  Seems so many more people have MTHFR mutation.  I can't seem to find much information on PAI-1.  Thanks in advance!

Re: Lurking...PAI-1 Question

  • Being on Lovenox technically makes you fall into the high risk category, but it's more a label than anything. There's no medical reason you can't do 99% of what non high-risk pregnant women do, you just get extra monitoring. You should research MFM's though if you don't already have one, and look for one that is knowledgeable in thrombophilias.

Some good places to look for info about PAI-1 are Dr. Braverman's website/blog, and the Yahoo Immunology group

  • I have PAI-1, MTHFR, and FVL.  I guess because I have three different thrombophilias, that's why I land in the high risk category.  However, PAI-1 is on my doctor's list of high risk factors all on its own.  As the previous poster said, it merely means some extra monitoring.  However, I was just diagnosed with two out of the three of these genetic issues, so I'm still new to what I am in for.
