Stay at Home Moms

someone just called me "Susie Homemaker"

Because I don't want to hang out with a friend on a Saturday night.

Saturday nights, are not Saturday nights in our home... my H works Fri-Tues and I don't like to be out late, especially because of my newborn who currently wakes 3x per night... I will be totally exhausted the next day, and I'm the one who cares for our children during the day.

She told me to get a sitter and stop being such a "Susie Homemaker" and then asked what happened to the "fun" me...

I kind of want to slap her.

  • I think thats a bit harsh, sorry she was unkind to you.... your priorities are your families needs. nothing wrong with that.

  • I have a similar "friend." She constantly asks me to go with her and friends to bars on Fridays- when my husband works Friday nights ( no exceptions) and I was never, ever a bar girl even before DS.

I offer to do lunch instead, and gently remind her each time. Add to that, I am a mom and don't choose to get a babysitter so I can go clubbing/bar hopping with a bunch of single girls...

  • I'd also like to mention her "fun" night out, is nothing I'm into and told her so and politely declined... then she begged and I caved and asked if I'd be home by a certain time and then she pulled out the Susie Homemaker card.

  • Jeez. That was unnecessarily hurtful :( I'm sorry she sucks! If she was caring for 2 kids, one of which had her up all night, she would feel VERY differently. You're a wonderful mother, and a huge sign of that is that you make sacrifices to benefit your family.  Hugs to you!

  • Ugh. I have a friend who doesn't make such snippy comments but she definitely doesn't understand why being out late is not pleasant when you have a waking in the night baby that gets up for the day at 6am. It is very frustrating. I'm sorry you are having this problem!

I feel your pain.  DH works 12-14 hour days on Saturday and Sunday so it's a no go for me to do anything at night. The rest of the week I work overnights and I'm trying to grab a nap before work.  So if I'm going to meet someone "out", it's for lunch.  People who are used to M-F jobs don't get that life with an off schedule has different limitations.

I'm guessing your friend has no kids?

Quite the contrary.... she has three!  The youngest is 6 though... maybe she forgets easily?

  • some just don't get it once you have kids, you aren't free to just hang out whenever. I agree with slapping her. :)
