Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Safest way to put toddler on your bike?

What is the safest way to ride your bike with toddler?  My daughter is 1 1/2.  I'm not a serious rider, but I do like to ride for fitness.  We live by the beach so most rides would be on bike trails or roads with no cars.  Although occasionally I do ride on a road with moderate traffic that has a bike lane.  My thoughts:

1. Bike trailer:  used one and loved it.  Felt really comfortable with her low to the ground because she couldn't tip if for some reason I got tripped up or something.  But my concern is because its low she isn't protected at all and it is not visible enough to cars and even other riders.  Also, will it be as fun for her being so low?

2.  Seats that attach to my seat:  basically concerned that if I fall she's coming down with mme thoughts?

  • MH got a seat that attached to the bike for our oldest when he was around 2. The seat was pretty protective and he always wore a helmet.

  • We use a bike trailer with DD when we go for rides around the lake. Most of the trail is just bikes and runners but some of it it shared with cars.

The trailer came with a BRIGHT orange flag and has very reflective material. Almost everyone who passed could see us very well. Most slowed down and were very careful around us because they could see we were traveling with a little one.

I was unsure about whether I wanted a trailer or a seat for DD, and I had similar concerns as you, mostly about the falling down part. The trailer is very stable, seats two and provides extra storage in the back for a picnic or diaper bag.

We got this and started using it when DS was about a year old. He is really loving it now that it is warming up-  we ride the bike to our community garden or park/playground pretty often. It's so easily, quicker than walking and I love that the seat is in front of me (versus what I remember from childhood, being in the back) so my arms wrap arohnd him.

I also have a bell on my handlebars that he loves ringing.

  • We also have the iBert that the PP mentioned and we LOVE it! Our DD really enjoys being in the front of the bike and it's great for interacting while riding. It's much more of an experience for both of us.

  • We also have the iBert.  Chase LOVES it!  It is so much fun for them if they can see where we are going.  It also allows me to see what he is pointing at and asking about so that we can talk while we are riding.
