Working Moms

How often is you DC sick from daycare?

I am new to this board so hello and thanks in advance for any feedback you provide.

My almost 2 year old DD goes to daycare M-W and then I am off from work with her Thursday & Friday.  My issue is, she seems to catch a cold about every two weeks.  She gets the cold during her stay at daycare M-W, suffers through it Thursday through the following week, gets better the following Friday-Sunday and then goes back to daycare on Monday to get sick again.

She's already had about 4 colds since October (one with an ear infection).  I have been told that this is normal by some moms and completely abnormal by other moms.  One mother told me that her DD only gets one cold per year.

We send our DD to a center not an in-home and prefer it that way but wondering what illness is like for your DC in daycare.  We wash her hands before drop off and when we pick her up and keep our house as clean as possible in an attempt to help the situation.  I am meeting with the Director tomorrow morning to discuss what they are doing (how often they wash the kids hands, toys, tables etc.).  Any help would be great.

Thanks!

  • Our experience has been similar. ?DD started daycare at a center in September. ?She's had 4 colds and one stomach bug. ?

  • Hi there!  Nice to see you, I hope you come back to the Nor Cal board again.

My DS gets a cold every few weeks, it is totally normal for that to happen.  New place, new germs, but it is helping them build up their immunity.

I joke that my son better not ever be sick in kindergarten since he gets sick so much now!

  • Hi Rachel.

It's been a crazy few months and I haven't had much time to be on the Nest.  I'm sad/glad to hear that I am not the only one going through this though.

How is Action Day working out for you?  We like the one in Mt. View a lot and Olivia is doing very well.

I'll get over to the Nor Cal board one of these days :-)

  • They used to get sick a lot at the former daycare center. No hand washing, dirty faces, babysitting service pretty much. They even had hand/foot/mouth--twice for DS. They started a new daycare in July, and (knock on wood), neither one of them has had anything. They encourage hand washing. They said their kids hardly ever get sick. It's very clean and I know they sanitize. Totally worth the extra money we pay.
  • My son started going to daycare when he was 3, in the first month he got pink eye & it seemed like he was always sick. After a few months he was much better. Now that he has been there for a year it seems he will get a few routine colds but that is it. The reason I chose that specific daycare center is because both times I visitied it none of the kids were crying, none had boogery noses or gobby eyes. They practice handwashing often and every day I always see someone sanitizing the tables and they do clean the toys often.

  • My son sees a pulmonologist and he told us that every child gets cold at least 12 - 15 times during the cold and fly season (around Oct - June) no matter if they are in daycare or not.

I have found that Tucker handles his colds much better this year (our second winter in DC) and doesn't really pick up any bugs or anything else at all. He's built up quite an immune system!

The mom who says that he kids gets one cold a year is full of it. Maybe he gets one full blown infection with the green nose but there is NO WAY that he only gets one cold.

  • My DD probably gets about 10-12colds/year. She pretty much always has a runny nose. During the summer months (May-October) she wasn't sick at all. I think its pretty normal.
  • DD has been in a center since August.  She has had 2 colds, and one of them turned into an ear infection.  Her nose is runny all. the. time.   She was kicked out of daycare twice on suspicion of pinkeye, but neither time it was actually pinkeye, and she was able to go back the next day.
  • My DD has been in Full-time daycare since she was 4 months old.  She rarely gets sicks.  I would say in the last year she has been sick 3 times where she stayed home.  I can't even remember when she last had a cold.  We do get our annual flu shots.  I think some kids get sick some kids don't.  I got lucky.
