DSLR Cameras for Baby Photos

I'm looking to upgrade from a point-and-shoot.  Any recommendations for a DSLR camera that would be easy for a newbie and not-very-technical mommy to use? Or recommendations on which ones to avoid?  I know these are expensive, but I'd prefer something under $1,000.

I got the canon rebel - I was actually just watching the training video and it is complex!  hopefully worth it ...

  • I got a Nikon D3100 when I was pg with DD.  Great camera for a beginner.  I suggest buying body only and getting a 50mm 1.8 lens instead.  Much better pictures.

If you aren't committed to learning how to use it is just upgrade to a top of the line point and shoot.

This. There really is no point in getting one if you don't plan to learn how to use it. That would be a big waste of money. I like my canon rebel, fwiw.

  • I really like the reviews at

     https://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/recommended-cameras.htm

he has recommendations for  any budget and any needs.

Also check out the FAQ on the photography board. I'verecently started lurking there and I've picked up a lot.

Exactly this.  There are middle of the road point and shoots that have lots of options.  I love my Olympus Pen E1 camera.

  • I second the ken Rockwell site. If you are a Costco member they typically have good prices, but shop around for sure. Bhphoto also has good prices. I am a Nikon fan myself, but some of the canons are nice. Definitely don't get carried away with features you won't use. Also, I haven't read much on it lately but the original SLRs that also did video had pretty bad videos. DSLRs are for pictures. Use your phone or a small camcorder for videos and you will probably get better quality. I bought a separate Samsung pocket camcorder that is about the size of a smartphone and have been happy with it.

As others have said the camera is only as good as the user, but some point and shoots take terrible photos. Get yourself a dslr and use it in auto mode until you can take time to learn to use it properly.

Finally, don't buy anything until you actually hold and play with it. Some cameras just don't feel right in my hand or the controls were too awkward to use.

  • Canon 60D. I prefer it over the Rebel models most definitely. I just got one for work (so wish it was personal) and I love it. I ordered it with an 18-135 lens off Amazon for under $1000.

I'd recommend the Canon G11 or Canon G12 for a good point and shoot option. This is what I use personally and I love it.

  • I highly recommend the Sony RX100. I got it for Christmas and I love it. It has DSLR functionality, but point-and-shoot size. I don't really use many of the fancy DSLR functions yet, but I don't think I'd have the time to set it up anyway while trying to capture a pic of my toddler running at full speed. The pics we've taken so far have been amazing. Plus, I love that it's small in size and easy to carry in a diaper bag or pocket.
