Doppler question

Hi Ladies,

I'm sure this has been addressed in the past, so I apologize if I'm being redundant. A friend is dropping off her doppler to me today and the OB coordinator at my practice is going to show me how to use it at my 10-wk appt this week. I know that they can be used with singletons this early, but any recommendations/tips for using them with twins this early? The last thing I need is to make myself more paranoid by not finding a heartbeat and freaking myself for no reason. I'm fighting temptation to not use it on myself tonight!

Any tips, advice, good youtube links, etc. would be appreciated!

Re: Doppler question

  • If your ob is showing you how, you'll get good positioning. Main thing to remember is to NOT be paranoid if you can't find the hb, as it takes practice at first. Once I practiced a bit, I could usually get both babies pretty quickly. Definitely helped me not freak out a lot of the time!

  • I didn't start using mine until 16 weeks, but after that I could usually find both hb pretty easily. With so many scans at the doc's office, I usually knew where the boys were positioned.

  • My doc couldn't figure out which baby was which until 18w or so. It's easy to pick up the same baby early on because they're so small and move a lot.

  • I started using mine around 12 weeks.  I got the doppler at 10 weeks but held off on using it so that I wouldn't freak out my PGAL brain if I couldn't find them.

After I got the hang of it I was telling my OB where to find them at our appointments.  Our LOs pretty much hang out in the same spots so I can usually find them within 30 seconds as long as they are not being too uncooperative.

My biggest tip is to just move the wand slowly as it only takes a fraction of an inch to be on or off the heart.  They are so small!
