Braxton Hicks Questions

Hi Mamas,

I'm not due (with my 3rd) until March 23rd, but this week I have been having (what I assume are) intense Braxton Hicks. I have had BH all along, but these are different, and send a stabbing pain straight into what I assume is my cervix, and occasionally also my rectum. When it happens like that I literally have to freeze in my tracks. I have noticed that many times when I get the intense ones, baby is moving at the same time. Do you think it's just bopping down on my cervix and that's causing the pain? Do you think it is annoyed by the contractions and is squirming because of them? Is anyone else experiencing this?? I drank a TON of seltzer water Friday in order to stop it, and although I don't have it as badly as I did Tuesday, it is still happening. I have my first NST with appt on Tuesday morning. Was figuring I'd just wait til then to ask the Dr....would you call or do you think this is normal and wait til Tuesday? Thanks in advance!!

Re: Braxton Hicks Questions

  • My Dr. office has instructions to call if I have 6 or more BH in an hour. If they are that often I'd go ahead and call. Also everything I've read said BHs shouldn't be painful just uncomfortable. If they are increasing in intensity it might be worth calling your Dr.

  • I have also been having pretty intense BH since December. My Dr says I just have a sensitive uterus and not to worry until they are timable AND painful together.. It is strange though last night I started getting what you described, pain in what feels like my cervix.. I am waiting it out just because I know for me that this is not labor. What has your Dr told you in the past about your BH? Mine are definitely extremely uncomfortable and painful at times..

  • Thanks, I did just try timing them, and ended up with 5 this past hour, 12:55, 1:09, 1:16, 1:26 and 1:51. TMI warning, I had diarrhea in between the first 2, and lower back pain (tailbone/rectum) between the 2nd and 3rd and 3rd and 4th. Then things calmed down so I figured it was still nothing, but had another one at 1:51, not as strong. These haven't been as painful as the ones I've been getting at night.

I had a lot of BH with my daughter, but also walked around dilated to 4cm for a week or 2. I don't remember the stabbing sensation with her BH's though. Part of me knows these aren't the real deal, but I can't help but wonder if they are doing some significant effacing/dilating so that when the real deal does start I won't have much time to get to the hospital.

I haven't mentioned them too much with the Dr. because they never hurt like this before. I have been having the non painful kind for so long I don't remember when it first started but may have been as soon as the beginning of the second trimester.

I think I will give the Dr a call, just not sure about it being Sunday if I'll have to go to the hospital as opposed to the office around the corner, and I have house guests (my sister and kids) coming tonight....never a dull moment lol.

  • I've been having a ton also. I mentioned it to my OB because I'm only 35 weeks. He checked me and I haven't had cervical changes, so he wasn't too concerned. He said if they become painful or timeable to call.

  • I've always gotten a lot of Braxton Hicks. I'm due right around when you are and they have been a lot stronger and more uncomfortable the past 2 weeks. They don't hurt and I can definitely tell they aren't real labor contractions but I'd say there are times when I'm getting 6 in an hour. Mostly I get them when I'm moving around or cleaning. I'm already 2cm dilated at 36 weeks so I know they're doing something. But yet I'm not concerned I'm in labor because they aren't regular and they aren't getting stronger. If they're timeable and getting more intense, definitely call your doctor.

  • When I get braxton hicks I sometimes get pains in my cervix because I think it's just where the baby is moving at the same time and she doesn't like it
  • Thanks Ladies,

So the update is just that I held off until my appt today, where she had to "guess" that I was about 2 cm 50% effaced because baby was engaged and it's head was in front of my cervix and she didn't want to torture me further trying to get her fingers all the way in there. She did say they were moving things along but she wasn't worried b/c it wasn't like I was already at 4cm. She's hoping I make it 4 more days to be "full term" but go before 39 weeks b/c of my age (They usually induce "old" moms at 39 weeks). ;) So it looks like I only have a couple weeks to go...GAH!
