Re: Are any EBF (no bottles) babies STTN?

  • Not here. She is waking up at least 3 times a night. No bottles yet.

  • Not us. He's waking up 1 to 2 times to nurse. Sometimes more and I blame teething since he doesn't stay long at the boob anymore during his session so he's not as full once he goes to sleep.

  • He is still getting up once at night, but I'm hopeful that soon he won't be getting up at all. But when he does get up to eat he is HUNGRY!

  • Mostly. We have the occasional middl of the night wake up, and he's going through an annoying phase of waking up at 5-530, but it's mostly 9/10-7/8.
  • He gets up twice a night to eat. He doesn't take bottles, so I have no idea how much he gets in a day, so I can't say "he doesn't need to be fed at night' like everyone keeps telling me.

He generally can't go more than 5 or 6 hours without waking up with the "hangries".

  • At our 6month appt, the pedi said I should work on cutting out the MOTN feeding. It took about a week, but we are good now.

And we decided to do the Ferber thing after that because he was outsmarting us with every nocry method we tried. He has now slept through the night once and has had a few nights of waking up and soothing himself back to sleep within 30 minutes. Hope I'm not jinxing it by talking about it!

  • Nope. On good night he's up 2 or 3 times. I lose count on the bad nights. We were cosleeping until he started rolling over and I got too nervous to continue. Now I'm hiking down the hall umpteen times at night.

FWIW, my DD was EBF also and started reliably sleeping more at night around 10 or months. She STTN right around her first birthday.

  • Nope.  He wakes up at least once per night.  Sometimes twice.  But normally just once.  Anywhere between 3-5 am.  I'm ok with once since I don't think he's getting all the calories he needs during the day.

  • She refuses all bottles and still not sttn, she's done it randomly like twice but that's it. She gets up generally once a night

  • If by STTN you mean sleeping as many as 8 hours at a time before waking up, then yes.  Last month, he was sleeping 7p to 6am or 7am without waking.  Now, he's up a bit more often.  He's waking between 3 and 4am these days to eat, and then goes back to sleep until between 7 and 8.  Sometimes he wakes up and needs help to get back to sleep between the MOTN feeding and up for the day.  He was sick for 3 weeks straight, though, so that affected his sleep too, and we're still trying to get back where we were.

  • She slept great until 4 months old. Since then she wakes up every 2 to 3 hours. It makes me very sad because DD1 woke every 2 hours for at least a year. I ordered a better sleeper this time around. Haha! This to shall pass is what I tell myself.

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

  • imageLiliDragon:
She sleeps 7 to 4 or 5 then back to bed until 7. I consider that STTN, but I'm not sure everyone agrees.

Mina does the same thing but she goes to bed at 8 and gets up around 8. Although, if we have somewhere to go, like church at 9 AM, then she sleeps until after 9!

  • Not STTN here. She is always up twice to eat. However lately she is also waking once or twice for no real reason at all. Sleepy mama!

This is basically us as well. I'm not really considering cutting out the early morning feeding, because he is starving by that time. He'll drop it when he's ready.

  • we do bottles, but its all BM (EP).  she was only getting up once in a 12 hour period at night until about a month ago.  just as she was turning 5 months she started waking 2-3 times a night.

we'll get a full night about once a week, otherwise she's up pretty consistantly at 10pm and 4am lately. and i don't know why people keep trying to push the drop the night feed.  ok, if your kid is just snacking, maybe.  my kid is sucking down up to 12 of her daily ounces at night (that being half to a third depending on the day) and no amount of pushing her to try to drink more during the day has changed it.

  • I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one with a EBF baby that gets up to eat still :)

i hate when people say that he's fine to go all night. Really because my breast don't have oz markings so I really don't know if is or not!  I'm not complaining, just curious. Thanks ladies

  • By most standards, I don't think so, but she's fine in my book. She typically goes down around 12 or 1 (I nurse her to sleep) and she sleeps until 7 or 8. Sometimes she only sleeps 6 hours, sometimes 9. When she wakes up, then, she normally eats and goes back to sleep for a few hours. I have no need or desire to make her sleep longer right now.

  • No, he got up twice last night, 4 times the night before. He did sleep through once.

  • my first sttn before the end of my mat leave, so no bottles there. It was glorious and we doubted we'd be so lucky twice. This guy is on the same pattern he was when I went back to work at 4mos - he gets up once, anywhere from 1 to 4 am, usually 3:30. I hate that time because I get up for the day at 5 and it's hard to go back to sleep for 45 minutes. So, daytime bottles haven't changed anything
  • DD only gets bottles of BM while at DC.  I BF when we are together.  She still gets up in the MOTN every 3 hours to eat.  Its so hard to function at work on so little sleep!  I really wish she would sleep a little longer between feedings!

Its odd though because around 6-8 weeks she started going longer stretches at night.  Maybe a 5-6 hour stretch, followed by another 4 hour stretch.  This only lasted about 4-6 weeks before she desided she liked getting up every 3 hours!  So right around the "4 month wakeful", then there was a growth spurt, then teething.  Now... she has no excuse.  I think she just likes getting up every 3 hours.

Like PP posters have mentioned, I'm afraid to force DD to drop a MOTN feeding.  She gets about 12 oz at DC (3 4 oz bottles), but I have no way to know just how much she is taking from me when we are together?  And, I still think she gets a decent amount of calories from me at night.

We currently room share, I nurse her to sleep, and I haven't done CIO, so I think I may be responding to her too quickly.  Its hard to know if she's really hungry or just wants comfort.  I'm trying to be better at not rushng to her if she is just whimpering.  Or if she does start crying, I'll first try giving the paci.  If that doesn't work, I'll pick her up and rock (sometimes she'll fall immediatly back asleep if I hold her), and if that doesn't work she must be hungey and we nurse.
