Vocab.

Went in for our 18 month check up and DS is only saying about 5 or 6 words (and that's on a good day since it seems he picks a favorite and forgets the rest) The dr said by 2 he should have about 50 words and beginning to put 2 to 3 word sentences together. That is just not going to happen. He's so smart and communicates extremely well so I'm not worried.

He'll actually point to a Mickey Mouse doll and then point to the tv to tell me to put it on or hand me a cup and then try to open the refrigerator for juice.

Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this and what you are doing about it. (are you sending them to be evaluated, working with flash cards?)

Re: Vocab.

  • My DS had 4 words at 15 months, then had a word explosion and by 18 months had 50 words.
If your LO is mostly communicating by pointing, just be sure that you use words to describe what he is indicating. This way, at least he will have the receptive language and by the time he is ready to be verbalizing himself, he will have those words in his knowledge base.
In terms of being evaluated, I know in my area, they usually won't start speech therapy services for language delay before age 2. Some kids just need more time.

  • That's exactly what we do. He'll point to a ball in a picture so I say "ball" and then he'll go get me a real one. So I know he understands me and the words it's just not coming out of his mouth.

The other day I said come on let's go to grandma's and he ran into his room, 2min later he came out with his shoes on (the wrong feet but he tried)

    Thanks for responding.

  • We are having "word explosion" the last month or so. She repeats everything in Spanish and English.
I think if they understand what you say and can follow directions "bring your shoes" or "pick up time" etc I wouldn't worry.

  • With my first that elusive "language explosion" was just something people talked about.  Then it happened and DD was literally saying 15-20 new words each and every day.  I actually started a list and in a week's span she said about 100 new words that she had never said before!  She was a talker from the beginning, but I was astonished by just now many new words she had.  For her it happened right around 23 months.
