Dads & Dads-to-be

Sometimes, she just doesn't get it..

We were given a box of clothes from my cousin a few days ago. Which we are very grateful for, but she still won't let go of the fact that I refused to keep 2 of the outfits. They did look brand new, but they are Steelers. His name is Jackson, after the Jacksonville Jaguars. They haven't been good recently, but still the team I root for. They used to be divisional rivals, and I grew up a Browns fan (from Ohio) We were even given a Jaguars plush for him/me. We had a room painted teal, but she made me paint it blue, I have something Jags related in every room in the house, even have a flag over our bed.

She just won't let it go that I won't put him in anything Steelers, even hang on to it as a back up. Am I being too stubborn? Or is it that she just doesn't understand?

Re: Sometimes, she just doesn't get it..

  • No, I get it.  We got a Purdue outfit from one of my mother-in-law's best friends who adopted twins.  That outfit went straight into a pile headed for Goodwill as I am an Indiana fan and will not have my son wearing Purdue clothing, free and in good shape or not.

She apparently doesn't understand the deep lying loyalties that are brought upon by rooting for a particular franchise/school.  It isn't like you said he couldn't wear ANY of the clothing because they touched the Steelers gear, you just found 2 outfits you don't want him in.

  • You are not wrong!  I am Philadelphia Fan in New York Area.
  • Loading the player...
  • Kentucky fan here, let someone try to put Duke or Louisville gear on my kid....
  • I'm a Packers fan, so I completely get it. The combination of black and orange (Bears) makes me vomit.

I am a Wisconsin Alum, so I can only imagine my cousin's wife (Michigan Alum) trying to pawn of some Wolverine crap on my boy.

There are teams that are allowed to represent in my house, other teams need not apply.

I have a deal with another cousin's wife (Cardinals fan). I will not get her girls Brewers gear, she will not get our son and future children Cards gear. She gets it, and that is why we get along so well.

    Really not complicated.......

  • you are not wrong... Giants fan here, but part of my family keeps getting my son Jets gear.... I keep using Truimphs voice and having my 6 month old son "say".. "this is great, for me to poop on!!"

Luckily my wifey understands that since we are men, this is what men do.

  • Don't give an inch of ground on this one.  You are not in the wrong.

I was waiting for someone to catch that.

I have been calling it black and orange since my grandpa told me to nearly 40 years ago.  Old tradition in the rivalry....Packer fans always refer to the blue as black.  As in, "the bears are all black and orange again, leaving Lambeau with another loss."  Same thing with them....We call the Pack the green and gold, Bears fans will never use the word gold, and throw yellow out there instead.

We try to disrespect those crap colors every chance we get!  It can get pretty messy at times between the two fan bases, we really do not like each other at all!!

Side note I, my cousins husband is the great grandson of Dan Devine.

Side note II, my grandfather, after he retired from the FBI, worked for the Green Bay Packers. His job was to escort the officials and investigate any threats they may have received from people during the week. People would actually call up the refs and threaten them if game outcomes did not match their wagers. He got four tickets for each home game, so I would spend Saturdays in Madison for Badger games and Sundays in Green Bay or Milwaukee for Packer games.

  • I hope your cousin isn't actually offended you won't dress your son in Steelers gear.

Also, I have a hunch your wife doesn't think your Son was named after the Jacksonville Jaguars. Or perhaps she just doesn't *know* that's the truth!

At this age I'm willing to dress my son in almost any team gear because I'm cheap and love hand me downs. DS has a Mariners shirt from my brother, and I've put it on him a few times. But I would draw the line at Packers gear. Cuz I bleed Purple!

I have a Copperstown classic from way back in the day.  Ken Griffey Mariners jersey.  Have it put away for that day my boy will fit in it.  I also have a signed Prince Fielder framed along with the cover of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel the day CC Sabathia clinched the Wild Card on the final day of the 2008 season.

  • My DH would light the house on fire before he'd let one of our kids wear a Leafs jersey.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • I would say a little of both.  I am a Steelers fan even though I have spent most of the past 25 years in Northeast Ohio.  My wife's family is all Brown's fans and my parents and I were all born in PA.  I have come to the conclusion that if anyone else buys him Browns clothes or gives us Browns clothes I will let him wear it.  Then I make sure that I get Steelers clothes to counter balance this.

  • Your doing your kid a favor by not putting him in Steelers gear. I truly cannot stand the Steelers, and even didn't buy certain outfits just because the main color scheme was black and yellow.

It's all Seahawks and UW Huskies gear for my kiddo and I'm darn proud of it!

I hardly see him, it's actually my uncle's wife's son. We don't have much contact, but his mom dropped them off to us.

She knows, but also really likes the name Jack, so it was kind of a compromise deal, without compromising :)

My friends have a kid named Archer. She just liked the name. He, meanwhile, loves the Archer cartoon. So it was win-win.

  • Many years ago I swore that I would name my firstborn son Brett, as in Brett Favre.  My generation finally had a Championship because of him, after all those years the Pack was at the bottom of the barrel. I near-worshipped him in my 20's.

So many folks in Wisconsin did just that, and then it all went down, and the name Brett could have been Adolf at that point.

I cannot imagine having to recall that hillbilly and his antics everytime I look at my son.  There are hundred of fathers in this state who have to do just that every single day.

  • You probly don't want a womans opinion but I say she is overreacting.  It's only 2 outfits that niether of you bought.  I'm way more picky than limiting sports teams.  I've gotten rid of disney princess and pooh entirely and that's way more than 2 outfits!
  • She's over reacting, or simply doesn't understand. I'm a packers fan, my boyfriend is a bears fan. We live in Houston, so we decided the baby can be in texans colors.

While I agree that you are not wrong, and I understand your point, there is a saying: "Happy wife, happy life."

Knowing how and when to pick your battles is important in any relationship, and even more so when kids enter the picture. There are so many things you will really need to work out between you two as things move forward, maybe this shouldn't be a defining moment...

If you relent now you can always throw them away once she has forgotten them. Or, you can purposely let them get super-pooped on and use that as the excuse to toss them. I bet it would make you feel even better!

  • Picking battles is one thing... but this shouldnt even be a battle to be picked...

Jaguars fan given Steelers baby clothes....  what do you do? throw away the Steelers baby clothes... If the mom is a die hard Steelers Fan, then it becomes a battle but he sounded like the mom was just mad that he threw away baby clothes not caring about the team... Hence, no battle... Throw away the Steelers stuff, move on, laugh about it with the family that gave it to them. :D
