Formula question - brand & type

I've been supplementing a bit with formula for a while, but now that I'm back to work my supply is dropping fast and I need to be ready when it's time to go exclusively to formula. Here's my issue. I started with regular Similac and Enfamil and it was too much on his tummy. He was pretty young so that may have been why, but he seemed gassy and uncomfortable. Then, I tried Enfamil Gentlease and it seemed to work ok. He doesn't spit up with breast milk, but did a bit on this. Nothing crazy though. Then, I got the Target brand Gentlease which he seems to hate the taste and he spits up a good bit on this. I stopped that and am trying Enfamil Infant which doesn't seem to be going great either. I was thinking of trying Similac Sensitive now. Thoughts or advice?? I hate to keep switching, but I just don't think we've found the right thing for him. Should I try regular Similac again since he is about 13 weeks now and was only about 4 weeks when we tried it the first time as a supplement??

Re: Formula question - brand & type

  • how quickly are you switching him? Are you doing it gradually by mixing the formulas or switching without easing into it?

  • Why did you switch from gentlease if it was working ok for you? That's what we use.

  • Daycare said he was spitting up a lot with Gentlease. He doesn't get much formula at home since I'm there to nurse. It's during the day that he gets formula a good bit now.

  • Our LO didn't have any luck with Enfamil at all. We switched to Gerber Gentle and that seemed to solve all of our problems. But every baby is different. I don't think there's much harm trying different formulas, as long as you are doing it gradually.

  • My baby girl had terrible gas issues so after trying 4 different types of formula, we are now on similac Alimentum and its been fantastic! Very gentle on the tummy!
  • We had similar issues when LO was first born.  We started him on Similac Advance but he seemed very gassy, so then we tried the Soy.  That seemed to be even worse! We then tried the Sensitive, but that didn't seem to help any, either.  We eventually went back to the Advance, and he does really well with it now. Maybe he was just sensitive to it at first because he was so little and his digestive system was still adjusting.  It could be the same for your LO - you may want to give the Advance another try since he is older now.

  • After BFing for ten days before tanking completely (the most I ever made in 24hrs was four ounces 3 days PP, the last day was barely a 1/2 ounce), we went with reg. Similac, then about a week later started Similac Sensitive (which helped a bit), but he was still so constipated.  Finally we went to RTF which helped tremendously!  But he still had rough days, until his doc at his two month app suggested prune juice, and that was really the miracle worker right there.  We are just now going back to powdered formula, easing into it with a few days of RTF and powdered, and switching every other bottle.

We'll see how it goes, hoping his stomach handles it better now that he's like 3 and a half months.  I read somewhere it could take two weeks to fully see the affects (good or bad) in a formula switch, but it sounds like your DS just has a hard time tolerating them.  I'd suggest the RTF, OR maybe he's allergic to milk based?  Maybe try Soy?  Also though switching so often might be a little hard on him, too?  Though really, I'd just talk with the doc and see what he says ~ good luck! :)

  • We use the Gerber Gentle.

The Similac gave him all kinds of gas and he cried alot from it and he always sounds congested after drinking it. He also spit up a bunch. I never tried Enfamil. We did try the Similac Sensitive sample that we got and that did seem to work for him. He still had the congested sound with it though.  My only issue with that is the sensitive formula's first ingredient is corn syrup solid. Weight issues run in my family so I wasn't a fan of using a formula with that as the first ingredient.

We settled on the Gerber Gentle because he doesn't sound all congested on it. He still has gas sometimes and we use gas drops in his bottles to help get rid of it but he's starting to process the gas better and doesn't need them as much.
