Weight Watchers and Breastfeeding?

Hello Ladies!

I haven't had my LO yet, but I plan on breastfeeding and I was wondering how that goes with dieting?  I've gained over 30lbs and I was a little overweight before I got pregnant, so I want to do something to get myself healthy again after baby comes.  I've been looking into weight watchers because it doesn't seem drastic and it seems like it can help me learn portion control and what not, but I was wondering how this works with breastfeeding. Are you aloud to diet while you breastfeed? I just don't want to do something that is going to affect my supply in a negative way, I really want to try my hardest to breastfeed for at least six months (hopefully longer) TIA!

  • I've used weight watchers while breastfeeding after both my boys. I didn't start until 5 months pp with my first and I think I started at 4 months pp with my second. It works well and never affected my milk supply. They give you more points because you are breastfeeding.

  • I did WW while nursing. You get a LOT of points-14 extra for EBF and 7 extra if supplementing.  I fiddled with the points a lot and just dropped 2-3 at a time as LO took in less milk so that I kept the average loss around a pound a week. I found it very manageable and I lost 50 pounds.

  • They do have a plan for nursing. However before you get sold on a specific plan for after baby, wait and see what happens. I gained 38 lbs total and at 3 weeks PP I'm down 30 after not doing anything! I'm pumping and supplementing with formula. I will probably start WW in the next month or so bc even when I lose these last 8lbs I still have a lot more that could go! I've done WW before and it was great as long as you stick to it

  • Weight Watchers has a plan for nursing moms - it gives you a lot more points when you are nursing - just make sure when you stop you stop eating the extra nursing points!

I did WW for years before I got pregnant and lost and kept off 70 pounds for over 2 years (basically until I got pregnant) for me.  It's really workable for your day-to-day life and easy to do in the long run.  I'd recommend it to anyone.

I was 230 pre pregnancy, 245.5 when I delivered, 214.5 this morning at 4 weeks postpartum. And I've been eating like crap b/c I had GD I've sorely missed my carbs, OJ, milk lol! My 1st goal I set myself was 200 I'm almost there without even trying! My endgoal is 160ish.

  • My main concern would be getting enough fat intake if on a diet like WW, in order to keep up healthy milk.
