Natural Birth

May I vent?

I hope I do not get in trouble for this....

I have a REALLY hard time reading all the things doctors not only tell women on my birth month board, but the fact that everyone believes everything a doctor tells them.
Are you really telling me that EVERY woman on my board legitimately had "low fluid levels" or "too small of a pelvis to deliver"?

I know these are serious and REAL things that CAN happen....but not as much as I've been reading. No way.

I am just sad that women are being stripped of the experience to birth their babies because doctors are ____________ (uneducated on birth/inpatient/paranoid of lawsuits/surgery happy).

That is all. I now hope I will not be kicked off the Bump for saying this :-)

  • Most women aiming for a natural birth experience this around their due dates.

The best thing to do is just not look as much as possible. Read stories over here, read happy stories elsewhere, rage against the machine in general, but try not to look too closely at stories that make you go "classic cascade intervention... again" with an eye roll.

You can never know which stories are totally legit and which ones are pushy ill-informed doctors. So don't try.

    This is great advice. Thanks.

  • I rarely experience an uninformed doctor.  I often experience a doctor who practices medicine conservatively due to lawsuits and/or a belief that if you control all the variables, you have a better idea of the outcome.  I occasionally experience a doctor who likes the convenience of surgery and scheduled inductions very much.  There is a very human appeal to the idea of not getting woken up in the middle of the night.  In the end, they're just trying to do a job, hopefully to the best of their ability.
  • I hear you. I do wish more women knew their options and felt comfortable pushing back.  It's good I do home births because I think any OB would hate me as a patient LOL.
  • I'm glad my doctor said he would do his best to help me have a "minimal intervention"
