The baby proofing continues... new desks

our current metal and glass desks just aren't munchkin friendly lightweight and won't tie to the walls.. so I just ordered two new desks for DH and I  which will be much safer and user friendly.  I've been scouring for good deals on something safer and got a good deal on them for Presidents day sales, they aren't anything fabtabulous but the price was good and I had a discount code for an extra $10 off.  I got two desks for just over the price of one of the others I had my eye on, so can't complain.

I also ordered a projector mount  so can now get rid of my book cases which are most def not munchkin friendly and are hidden behind the sofa.. but that won't keep him out  much longer...and that means I can now move the sofa back to it's original spot which fixes another safety issue.. at least for a lil while.

So now all I have to worry about is the dang fireplace and when everything else is done.. that means I can break down his baby jail and fix other problem too.  Then my not very friendly front room will be much more baby friendly and we won't have to have  a huge baby jail

..I'm thinking of building a huge wooden chest for over the un-used fireplace ..storage and safety all in one.

Sheesh my men are expensive to maintain lately lol. Wink

could you re-use baby jail and put it around the fireplace?
That was the original idea.. but since he has so many toys in his baby jail  and I have stuff I don't need every day but don't want to get rid of or store... I was thinking a wooden chest with a false bottom would solve all the problems in one go and look a bit nicer and it would be heavy enough to  pull up on without moving. Later on I'll add a lid to it and make it into a seat or something or just move it into his room.

I don't want a fibre board toy chest that will fall apart in 3 months.. I want something that will last till he is grown up.. and all the ones I have seen have been hella expensive and not quite right size or style.

The baby jail is most def reusable and is designed in such a way it can be broken down into various combinations of panels and attached to the walls... and later on it will be great when we get a house and a puppy lol

  • .. and so it begins....this is the lumber for the main crate toy box .. later in the week I'll pick up the extra pieces for the false panel ..if I still want to go that route after the main box is built :)  Gawd I miss crafting and all my woodshop tools.. but it feels kinda exciting to have a project I can do indoors while the munchkin is occupied since HD cut all the wood to size for me so the mess will be minimal.

  • well I don't plan to paint this one.. I'm thinking vintage travel crate, stained maybe some govt warnings stamped  on it or old travel trunk type tickets.. haven't decided yet but I def dont want painted with a theme..I want something ageless since it's probably going to last a good long while and will eventually become a seat or a maybe a collectors box coffee table style thing.. you know with the glass over cubbes .. like a shadow box table.

but knowing me from past experience I will start out with one idea and end up growing into something completely different .. that is often how my crafts go.. so I start out with a base idea and go with the flow lol.

It will have some big old handles on it.. either rope to look like a munitions crate style or big iron  or leather straps.. we'll see

  • Baby playard is your friend. And cheaper. That's what we do when we can't keep our eyes on her.

He already has a deluxe baby jail.. 6 x 8 fully padded and carpeted with a quilt in one corner for naps and toys up the wazoo.. but he needs some freedom and also needs to learn what he can and can't touch and he won't learn that in there, but I won't compromise his safety either.. so this is the best solution for us. He will still have a baby jail for those moments he needs to be contained ..it just won't be AS big as it is now. We needed new desks anyway and I've been wanting to mount the projector and get rid of cluttered shelving and put my sofa back in front of the window so this is just a good safety solution/ clean up/organize that works out all round. And as for the toy box.. extra seating +storage all in one is perfect for our apartment ..right now he drags his toys in and out and around in a pampers diaper box which he just loves... lol but it wont last long the way he slings it around and he is getting way too many toys or that to last LOL
