What is the longest stretch of sleep do you get at night?

How old is your LO?

What is the longest stretch of sleep do you get at night?

And do you think you did anything different to get that longer stretch of sleep at night?

My LO is 7 weeks and it varies between 2 and 5 hours. I cant see a pattern in her sleeping. Yesterday, she slept a lot during the day and we had a rough night.

Re: What is the longest stretch of sleep do you get at night?

  • Once DD1 slept 5.5 hours. Once. ;) At this point, they rarely make it longer than 3.5 hours, if that. They're hungry little ladies! We didn't do anything different that night we got the longer stretch -- she ate the same amount, just happened to stay down longer.

  • Ds is almost 7 weeks.

He wakes normally at 9, 12, 3 and sometimes hourly after that. Average sleep is 2 hours. There was one glorious night where he slept 5 hours and I felt like a happy sane person again. Ha. Hasn't happened since...

We have changed a few things lately and they seem to be helping. We only change him at night if he's poopy or really wet. We keep the lights off and don't talk to him as much. We don't offer food instantly. We don't pick him up simply because he's up, but wait until he's annoyed. We also bathe him before bed in a new routine and it relaxes him.

I am going to try to do the bath thing tonight to see if it makes a difference. Throw in some lavender lotion for good measure. We also wait until LO cries (I mean, I am a heavy sleeper, so a little bit of a fuss is not going to wake me up) and we keep the house dark at night.

I dont understand though about not changing the diaper at night. If I get up, it is because my LO is crying. So she is already awake, so when people say they dont change the diaper so not to wake them up, isnt it kinda of pointless by then? They are already awake and if the diaper is already a bit dirty, maybe they will wake up again sooner? Just curious.

My LO hates a wet diaper so I am not sure if that would work with us.

Is it like the HALO sleep sack? We swaddle with her arms out because she is already moving on her side.

The diaper thing is more about as they go back to sleep after eating. We will change it when he wakes up but if he pees again when he's already sleepy again, we don't bother.

  • Our son will be 7 weeks tomorrow and sleeps anywhere from 3-5 hours normally at a stretch. Last night he actually slept from about 9:30pm to 5am straight (and it felt GLORIOUS!), but that hasn't been the norm.

As far as doing anything different, I do find that on nights we give him a bath, he'll sometimes sleep longer. The routine is usually bath, lotion, bottle, bed. But at around 6-7 weeks, I'd say the 2-5 hours you're experiencing at night is typical.

This, except we use the Summer Infant SwaddleMe. It's been a lifesaver...it's the only way he'll stay asleep without wacking himself in the face with his own hands.

  • I think a baby's age, FF vs. BF, and weight of baby can also factor into how long they can sleep, right? So, a smaller baby that's EBF is more likely to sleep shorter stretches than a FF, larger baby, I thought.

FWIW, DS is EBF, and is on the smaller side at 6 weeks (is probably right around 10 lbs now, but that's 25th-ish percentile). The longest DS has ever gone is 5 hours-- it's usually 3-4 hour stretches.

  • DD is 6 weeks old. She goes down for the night between 9 and 10 usually and her first stretch of sleep is usually 5-7 hours. Soooo nice. She is then up between 4 and 6 AM, will eat and fall right back to sleep for 2-3 hours.

We haven't really changed anything too much. We have been putting her down earlier than in the past, but not much else. Since day 1 she has been in her crib swaddled in a halo sleepsack. When she wakes up she gets a new diaper, a bottle of pumped BM, and then she is back to sleep. Love our long stretches of sleep and hope they last!

  • DS2 sleeps about 2-3 hours at a time.  With DS1 we tried all the tricks to get him to sleep longer: baths, consistent bedtime routine, cluster feeding, dream feeds, and many more.  Nothing worked except for age.  I truly believe the child will sleep longer when he/she is ready.

  • DS is 5 weeks and sleeps 5-7 hours a night. Swaddling really helps. He sleeps in the RnP in our room. If not swaddled he is restless and only sleeps 2-3 hours.
  • DS is 5 weeks 4 days. We usually get a 4 or 5 hr stretch feed then another 3 hrs then wake up to feed again. SO takes the second feed so I get pretty decent sleep.

  • I've been reading the book 12 hours sleep in 12 weeks. I think it's got some helpful ideas for getting baby to sleep through the night.

The author says that you should not do any sleep training before LO is 6 weeks and at least 9lbs.

We will be starting sleep training next week when LO is 6 weeks. He is up 12, 3, and then 5-6am with some variation. I'll be working on cutting out the 3 am feed.

  • DD will typically take her last bottle between 9 and 10 fall asleep by 10:30, sleep until 2or 3, then wake again between 6:30 and 7:30. She's been roughly following this schedule for about a week now. I hope she keep it up because I go back to work next week, and this amount if sleep is amazing!

  • DD is 7 weeks & she slept 7 straight hours on Sunday night. From 10pm to 5am. It was wonderful. :P I think what helped was making sure she was "topped off" before I put her in her crib. Lately she's been going anywhere from 4-7 hour stretches. And that started once we moved her to her nursery at 5 weeks.

This is pretty much our exact schedule.
    Last feeding around 10 pm
    Awake between 2:30-3:30 most nights.
    Then up around 7

This is just a recent change, She used to get up at 5:30 as well but just recently pushed that back. Which is great because she used to eat at 5:30 and then be up again around 7-7:30

This was my son!! He was a horrible sleeper and at 2 and a half is still not the best!

My DD will do a 4-5 hour stretch sometimes at night but usually she's spot on awake at 3 hours. Still, she's a dream baby compared to DS.

  • How old is your LO? 7.5 weeks

What is the longest stretch of sleep do you get at night? Longest ever 5.5 hours. Last night she was up every 2-3 hours and I swear the night before she didn't sleep.

And do you think you did anything different to get that longer stretch of sleep at night? She feeds for over an hour before her first stretch of nighttime sleep and that is always her longest stretch.

I'm not sure, but we do a very tight swaddle with arms in.

  • Our son is 7 weeks and gets between 2-3 hour stretches.  I keep hoping that he will sleep longer and am bummed out when I read that most everyone else's babies are sleeping longer.  He was born 2.5 weeks early and was and still is a small baby (5th percentile) I would give anything for even 4 hour stretches!  Good thing he is super adorable and I love the crap out of him! =)

  • She is 2 months and sleeps around 3 sometimes 4 hours. Last night was 5.5 which is the longest she has ever gone. We had her 2 mon shots today and her pedi said babies sleep through the night at 12 lbsDD is almost 10 lbs so I don't expect her to be sleeping long stretches yet.

I was going to say the same thing... This question isn't really valid (or the answers aren't really valid) without specifying ff vs bf... My LO is 5 weeks adjusted (12 weeks actual) and still has never slept more than 4 hours at a time. Usually it's 2 1/2-3 hours. He's EBF. According to my doctor, at this point, EBF babies shouldn't go more than 4 or 5 hours period, regardless of weight as it's not good for supply during these early weeks to let them go longer.

  • Almost 8 weeks. My son loves to eat and hates to sleep.  He typically sleeps 2 - 2.5 hours at night.  Sometimes it's 3 and I'm so stupid happy.  He slept a 4 hour stretch twice and I felt like I won the lottery.

  • DD is 5w and for the past 5-6 days we are getting 6-7 hours at night

Anyhow I was sick yesterday so I let her sleep a lot during the day and she woke up at 4am (so only after 3 hours)

The last night feeding (around midnight) is 4oz of formula so that might help with getting a longer stretch (I BF her pretty much the rest of he day)
