Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Jumping over a week early with a question

I am a mom of three.  My older two didn't nurse at all, but I am nursing my youngest and it is going well.  She isn't staying full between feedings, so I am planning on starting her on solids right away.  I was talking to my SIL and she was telling me that since Eryn isn't formula fed that I need to start her with rice cereal for the vitamins.  Both my older two girls reacted to it, it caused my middle child to break out in hives so I was hoping to skip it totally.  Does she need cereal or can I go to purees?

  • Cereal is absolutely not necessary. Go ahead and start with fruits and veggies.

  • Skip the rice cereal, it really doesn't have any nutritional value.  I like https://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com/ for ideas on what foods to start first.

What you SIL was probably talking about is that BF babies need iron starting at 6 months. FF babies get iron in their formula, but at 6 months BF babies have depleted their iron reserves so to speak and need to get iron from another source. BM does have iron and it is absorbed easily, but there are also a variety of foods that are iron rich (winter squash & sweet potatoes are some) that you can incorporate into LO's diet.

DS is 7.5 months and is EBF still and he gets oatmeal 1x a day as his breakfast for the iron in it. We mix a fruit with it and he loves it. When it comes to starting food, you can start with anything (fruit, veggie, oatmeal, etc) that you want really.

  • We did oatmeal cereal for about a month because LO wasnt into solids, but our pedi wanted us to try at least once a day to help him get the hang of it. Pedui suggested cereal since it is cheap. But you can totally skip it!
  • My DD is EBF and we started with veggies.

  • Since your LO is nursed your Pedi might recommend vit D drops, but they would have told you that right away. Some pedi's dont even think that necessary anymore. My LO is BF and is on them since birth.

Pedi recommended starting solids at 6 months. You can give whatever you want, you dont have to start with cereal. Good Luck!
