Parenting after a Loss

When did you stop swaddling?

DD is about to outgrow the newborn Halo Sleepsacks swaddler and BRU doesn't carry them in a small in cotton. They have fleece which is not what I want. I have some old Kiddopotamus swadders but they might not be very effective in keeping her arms in. She will flail them like a windmill when not swaddled tightly. It also helps her fall asleep and stay asleep for like at least five hours at night. I can't remember when we stopped swaddling DS but it was when he was too big for the Halos. I might consider ordering them on Amazon in the small size they have but I still have a bunch of Kiddopotamus swaddlers that I can still try.

Just wondering when most LOs stop being swaddled.

Re: When did you stop swaddling?

  • We still swaddle for sleep at 4 months old. We originally used a hand swaddled recv blanket or small SwaddleMe, then, when she outgrew those three weeks ago, we tried the Miracle Blanket. She slept 11 straight hours that night, and every night since in the MB. She had been giving us a 6 to 7 hour stretch, feed, then 3 hour, before the MB.

Oh, and we have a large SwaddleMe I just started using for naps. I'm trying to train her to take naps laying down, rather than in my arms.

She hasn't started rolling yet, but am considering pulling the swaddle when she starts. I hope it doesn't ruin her sleep.

  • My kid is going to need to be swaddled for the next 10 years I think.

He is 4 months and still sleeps swaddled. I did the SwaddleMe's until he outgrew the size I had, then I did Halo but he kept breaking out of those. Now I use the escape proof swaddle, however he still escapes. But he can't sleep without it, so I just re-wrap him when I feed him in the night.

I tried a few naps without swaddling and it was an epic fail.

  • Where would I find the Miracle and the Swaddle Me? Thanks ladies!!!!

ETA: never mind. I see BRU has the Miracle Blanket. I'm sold on the reviews already and will make a run this week.

  • We stopped at six weeks, when he could bust out. He wasn't a fan of them, liked to have his hands up by his head. Bonus for me: One less habit to break later. There were some nights his startle reflex drove me batty, but overall it was the right move for him.

  • We still swaddle too. DD is 4 1/2 months old or so.We just use an A&A still. I tried using a cotton Halo and she hated it so we went back to the A&A. She does manage to break out of it most nights but she still sleeps after getting her hand out to suck on it. I'm ok with that though. I guess she is slowly training herself to sleep without it. But for now it helps her fall asleep. Once she starts rolling over consistently it will be gone.

  • We swaddled until he started rolling. I tried to break him of it earlier, but when he started teething, the swaddle came back out. I think we weaned him from it around 5-6 months. I always used the Aden & Anais blankets. They are the longest and widest I could find and are easy to get tight. Plus, they're lightweight and breathable, which was important to me, especially considering our fickle weather.

ETA: As a warning about the miracle blanket - I didn't use it, but several friends did. They cursed it when it was time to wean their children from it. It's a great swaddling system, but the kids get dependent on it.

Buy Buy Baby carries the SwaddleMe blankets. They also carry A&A.

  • We never swaddled our kids. Even in the hospital I would unswaddle in favor of kangaroo time.

I've actually never seen the MB in either BBB or BRU, although both places plus Target carry the SM. A friend sent us our MB from Amazon, but I'm sure it's available on other websites and maybe stores!

I just realized the Swaddle Me's are by Kiddopotamus and I do have a bunch of these already in two different sizes. They didn't work well with DS because he could wiggle out of them and even he could get his arms up and out of the Halos. He really hated the swaddle from the start! DD is the opposite so the SwaddleMe's that I have might work...at least I can save my money for now and if they don't work for her, Miracle it is.

  • We swaddled with this method using A&A blankets and a receiving blanket:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5K4VdZxwsu4&list=PLOin_dBJNIFRLPmQPNqq1hHryBzHQ0Ud6

We swaddled until she was about 5/6m old. She knew how to roll over both ways by 4m, but she never tried in her crib. That was the age she finally started breaking out all the time. But she was also a peanut :)

  • We stopped swaddling around 4 months, when she was able to get any swaddle (Miracle Blanket, A&A, the escape proof one from youtube) up over her face during the night. It just wasn't safe. We dropped it cold turkey. The first 2-3 nights were a little rough, but then she went back to her usual sleeping patterns. She also became a belly sleeper about this time.

Buy them on Amazon, they sell larger sizes there. I was in tears when we had to ditch the swaddle. She was busting out of the large Halo sack with swaddler by that point though.

  • DD is a belly sleeper so we stopped swaddling around 4-5 months old.

Also, if your going to use the A&A blankets, go to Amazon to buy them and make sure you buy the larger size ones so you can use it longer. The ones at BRU are the smaller size.

  • We have been arms out since the beginning, just legs are swaddled. He would spend 30 minutes trying to break his arms out. He self soothes by sucking his fists so wrapping them up was frustrating him. FWIW I hear marvelous things about the miracle blanket!
