Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Switching health insurance right after baby is born?

I am currently carrying the health insurance for both my husband and I through my company. My husband is self-employed so it made sense for him to be on my policy. After I got pregnant we decided that after the baby is born I will stay at home to care for it and complete my degree. We looked into getting private insurance right away but because I am pregnant that is considered a "pre-existing condition" and we were not able to switch. Also, since I have 5 months more of working, it doesn't make sense for me to switch until I need to.

So the plan is now that we will stay on the companies insurance until after I give birth, then look for private insurance right away so I can put in my notice at work that I will not be returning. My questions about this are...

-Is there a waiting period after a baby is born before you can get new insurance?

-What is the (approximate) price jump from covering 2 adults, to a family (Before they knew about the pregnancy, Aetna had quoted us about $160/month for the two of us which seemed CHEAP)

Thanks for any clarification!

  • I am not sure if there is a waiting period, maybe ask the potential insurance you plan to go with whether or not there is, it might depend. And that seems reasonable for Self+Spouse insurance, I paid about 32/per week for just self pre-baby and pre-marriage. We pay 145.66 a WEEK for Insurance through Blue Cross Blue Shield for Self/Spouse and Children. But they also covered all but 2000 dollars out of 11,000 is cost to pop out our LO, so I am glad to pay that!

  • Truly you just need to contact companies to find out what their price is. For the company I work for, I can have single insurance, single +1, or family. There is $15 difference between the single +1 and family plans.

Also, are you planning on taking FMLA leave (and/or using STD)? Or letting your employer know before you leave you won't be returning? The reason I ask is because if you take leave, then let them know you won't be coming back, most companies require you to pay back insurance premiums while you were out.
