Lent

Sorry if this has already been discussed...

If you usually give something up for Lent, are you giving up anything this year?  If so, what?

I just can't come up with anything to give up.  I keep trying to come up with something not food related, because there is already so much food I can't have (and if this baby is anything like both of it's big brothers, it will also be intolerant to dairy and soy and I'll have to give those up soon enough too).

When I was pg with DS1, I gave up listening to the radio in the car, which was really hard, but not really feasible now, since I'm mostly listening to kid's music in the car (which I would happily give up!).

Re: Lent

  • Lent is hard this year since I have GD and have already given up most of my usual vices. Sweet tea, chocolate, and alcohol were my go-tos.  One year I gave up Facebook. It's lame but I think i'm going to "give up" cursing.  I work with a bunch of men (for the next two months at least) and it's the primary form of communication in our office.  It's a good time to try to clean up my potty mouth.

  • I ususally give up somethng food related too.  One year I gave up TV, but that was really hard to do.  This year, a church that I attend when I visit my parents is reading the New Testament in 40 days, which I thought was intereting and that would be what I do for Lent this year. I was able to download the their reading plan. They break it down into 30 min of reading a day.

  • Just curious why give up listening to the radio in the car? Is there something "bad" about it that I'm not aware of!

This isn't lame at all- it's a great idea. The thing you give up for Lent should typically be something that separates you from God/gets in the way of your spiritual life. Lots of people give up food, and there's nothing wrong with that per se, but it usually doesn't do much to improve your spiritual life.

PP's idea of adding something is awesome too- instead of giving up, maybe you could volunteer more or something like that.

I don't do the whole Lent thing anymore, I found that I kept doing it for my own selfish purposes and it had little to do with my relationship with God. But I think it's great when people do!

  • This year I am giving up Facebook, twitter and Instagram. I deleted the apps on my phone to help with the temptation. I'm also going to make a promise to myself that I work out at least three days a week. I haven't gotten lazy lately.

A lot of times, people will give up a form of entertainment, not because it's bad, but to use that time for prayer or meditation instead. In this case, it honors the idea of true sacrifice- something that you don't "have" to stop doing, but something you sacrifice to improve your spiritual life. Though I wouldn't recommend meditating while driving. :)

  • I'm not actually Catholic, but I always give up something- it just seems like a good way to make sure you still can, you know? Last year I gave up alcohol, and that sucked, but since that's built in for me this year I'm going to give up road rage.  Which sounds weird, but I live in Houston and the drivers here are crazy, I feel like I'm always getting aggravated in traffic and I need to chill out. I don't scream at people or anything like that, but 40 days without any rude comments muttered to myself in the car is going to be tough!

    Thanks for the clarification!

I don't usually give up something just because it is bad for me...I give up something that is hard for me to give up.  It's a sacrifice, to remind me of Jesus's sacrifice.  Not having the radio distracting me in the car also left me alone to reflect and think about things.

  • I am not going to give anything up this year but decided to try to do little extra things instead--make an effort to volunteer more (I usually volunteer Saturdays with a running group but I have been a little bit of slacker), add some fruits to my diet, do one nice thing for someone everyday. Just little things that make a little difference.

This is true. Thanks for giving me some perspective.  Since we've been without a home church for a few years I've kind of forgotten the whole reason for lent.

  • Since I've already given up so much during this pregnancy, I've decided to stop whining and be more grateful for the positives in my life. I've gotten into a bad habit of complaining to DH about this pregnancy and how difficult my days are, and quite frankly I'm starting to sound like a brat. It's time I start acknowledging what a blessing this baby is and how lucky we are that we're getting the family we always dreamed we would have.

  • We always give up fast food, every year.  The hardest part of lent for me is the meatless days.  I love meat.

  • Instead of giving something up, I'm going to try to do a gratitude prayer every day, hoping it will help me focus on the good stuff in life and less on the things that worry me.

  • I'm also giving up swearing. Wine was my usual vice that I give up during lent - but I'm obviously already doing that ;)

Time to clean up my sailor mouth!

Hahahahaha I wish this wasn't true for me as well!
  • I've successfully given up red meat and poultry for the last two years and I want to do it again this year but MH and mom seem to think its not a good idea... IDK I still want to do it, we'll see... I might start and not commit, if it happens it happens, if it doesn't and I feel sick well I'll go back... But they both seem to be completely against it :(
  • I'm thinking that this year would be a good year for me to commit to something instead of giving something up. So I'm going to commit to doing more exercising, including things like squats that will help strengthen me in preparation for giving birth. And I can use that time spent doing the exercises to be grateful for all the good things in my life.

  • Just FYI, the no meat on Fridays doesn't apply to pregnant women. I'm all about that this year!

Last year I gave up alcohol and and made a point to get to church every Sunday during Lent. This year I think I'm trying for no swearing which will be tough because I have a horrible mouth.
