We moved my oldest around 8 months.I know she still could have fit in the seat.It just did not seem to be comfortable for her.
I hope this time around to get through winter and then switch them.So I hope I get to 8 months. One of my babies is big, so I am not sure we will make it.
When he/she has outgrown it, has mastered sitting unassisted (shopping carts, high chairs, etc.), has gotten too heavy to carry, and/or you won't miss being able to keep them asleep in their seat.
DS was 4.5 months when he outgrew his carrier (he hadn't reached either of the requirements, but his head was at the limit for the top of the shell). Luckily he was sitting unassisted at this point, otherwise it would have been tough out in public.
DD is still on the first slot, and I have no issues carrying her...so I'm going to milk it for as long as possible. I'd personally rather deal with a carrier than to wake her up, even if she does become a sitter soon. Her sleep is so precious to me LOL
When the weight limit for the infant carrier is reached.
The weight limit on ours is 30 lbs. My nearly three year old weighs 30 lbs. Needless to say, it's been a long time since he sat in an infant carrier.
I think whenever you get to the point where it's easier to take LO out of the seat instead of using the carrier is a good time to switch.
Oh, wow! Ours goes up to 22lbs or 29inches so I that's what I went by. I wonder why my Graco carrier's weight limit is so low? Learn something everyday!

Different models I have the one that is 22lbs too. It's a smaller car seat - I actually prefer it. The car seat is lighter for me to carry, and most babies outgrow by length anyways. There's no way I am going to carry a 20lbs+ baby in it, let alone a 30lber haha

We have the 22lb model too. I wouldn't want the 30 or 35lb one at all. A family member has one and the seat itself looks huge. Ours is already a pain to carry with what I think is a 13 some pound baby [haven't weighed her in a while].
If LO stays on the 3rd percentile curve she has stuck to for months, she'll outgrow this seat at something like 18 months... yeah, most likely won't have her in this seat for THAT long, but I do think we'll use it a bit longer than most people do since she is so tiny and we can get away with it.

Same with us we are less than 3rd percentile! Her 6 mo apt she was 12pounds4oz!

We are moving DS this week, as soon as the Britax seats we ordered are delivered. He is already over 20 lbs and we stopped carrying him in is infant seat about a month ago. His infant seat only goes to 22 lbs.
He will be 7 months on Thuraday, but he was a premie so his adjusted age is almost 6 months old.
I've been meaning to actually ask this. Just in the last week or so, it seems like DS has gotten WAY heavier in his carseat. I wanted to wait until spring, for warmth issues like others mentioned, but we might have to move him sooner. He is just getting too heavy to lug around!
DH and I married 8 years.
Mom of three, stepmom of one.
hope to make it to the weight limit on the carrier 30 lbs.nbsp; then the convertable that goes with our base is supposed to go to 70 lbs or so.
I was just wondering what car seat system you are using? I didn't know they had convertible car seats that would use the same base as an infant car seat. The Graco Smart seat is the only convertible I could find that had a base you can snap the seat into, but it does not use the same base as my Graco Snug Ride.
We will be switching in the next month. Her infant seat is for babies up to 29 inches and she's 27.5. She's nowhere near the 22lb weight limit. I had hoped it would last a little longer but oh well!
