Hi ladies. I was reading the insert for pitocin...found here under prescribing information: https://www.jhppharma.com/products/brands/pitocin.php --> https://www.jhppharma.com/products/PI/07112011/Pitocin-42023-116-02-Package-Insert-2011.pdf
While it does indicate that pitocin is applicable in third stage, it seems to state that the shot of pitocin (versus an IV delivery) should only be given after delivery of the placenta.
Postpartum: Pitocin is indicated to produce uterine contractions during the third stage of labor and to control postpartum bleeding or hemorrhage.
Intramuscular administration. (One mL) Ten (10) units of Pitocin can be given after the delivery of the placenta.
I'm a FTM, baby due in May, and I've heard stories about women getting the pitocin shot to help facilitate the delivery of the placenta. This seems to contradict that.
Have you heard of this before and if so, is this something to be concerned about?
I saw a post a few days back about how lots of moms on this board think it is still okay to get the shot and now I'm wondering about it.
I plan to ask my midwife about this at my next appointment. Just wanted to see what you all thought about this and if I'm making a big deal out of nothing.
Thanks!
