Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Penis surgery :(

My little guy is 3 months now and will possibly need surgery in the future for hypospadia and chordee.  Hypospadia is when the hole in the penis doesn't correctly line up with the urethra, and chordee is when there is a slight curve of the penis, I have read that the two often occur together.  I'm wondering if anyone has had any experience with this procedure/condition and what your thoughts were, any advice to get through it, how was recovery, etc.  I'm obviously terrified of having my baby put under and having surgery! :(

Re: Penis surgery :(

  • My nephew had this same issue as a baby.  he had the surgery and ironically I was just asking my brother about it the other day and how it had all gone and if there were any permanent "scars".  He reported that it went very smoothly when my nephew was little and that it is was a smooth recovery and looks totally normal now.  Hope this helps.

  • Ooh, that's good to know, thanks!!!
  • One of my friends sons had this surgery when he was one. She said that changing his diapers was horrible because it looked really bad and upset her but the actual surgery and recovery wasn't too bad at all. More that she felt so bad for him. Her son is four now and has been perfect since his surgery! I can get you her email address if you have any questions you want to ask her. I know she wouldn't mind! Good luck.
  • My first son had surgery for Chordee at 6 months and everything went smoothly. It upset me more than him. He didn't even cry at diaper changes.

My second son will have surgery for hypospadias, but he is only 7 weeks at this point. We see the pediatric urologist on Monday.

  • Ds had this surgery at 7 months old, and then also needed a second repair at 13 months old since a fistula developed. While the surgery itself went well and recovery wasn't too bad, it's never fun to have to watch your little guy go under. However, ds is not 2 yrs old and everything looks and works great. My biggest tips are to make sure that you have two people for all diaper changes while the catheter is in (which will range from a few days to a few weeks after the procedure). I imagine it could be done with one person, but it would be very difficult and stressful. Even with 2, it wasn't easy. My other big tip is that after the place the catheter in, especially the first few days after, your son is likely to experience bladder spasms. These suck. Ds would out of nowhere just scream out in a way I have never heard and we'd both cry : ( They last for less than a minute, but still so terrible. However, there is a med that they give you to prevent these and relax the bladder. Make SURE that they give this to your son before leaving the hospital and as soon as possible after waking up from the surgery. We were insistent on this the second time and he never had the bladder spasms, or at least wasn't in major pain from them. Big difference. I forget what the med is called, but you can google, or they will know what you are talking about. Good luck with this. It sucks having surgery looming over your head, but it will be great to have it over with. Other than diaper changes and possible bladder spasms, recovery was very easy on ds. He acted normally that very night, and slept, ate, and played the same both times. Best of luck!
