Success after IF

Abnormal pap at 15 weeks

So I just left my doctor's office and was told that the pap smear they did a few weeks ago came back abnormal (level 1, almost level 2?).  She didn't sound TOO concerned but scheduled me for a colposcopy.  My question is 1) Could the fact that this is an IVF pregnancy have anything to do with that?!  and 2) Has anyone else had this happen?

  • Not sure about the level 1 vs level 2 thing, but could it be that you are positive for Group B?  My second time around I found out I was positive for that at a pap in the beginning of my pregnancy.  Or could you maybe have BV or something?

Not sure, just throwing things out there.  Good luck.

  • I don't think this has anything to do with IVF. All pregnant people are given a Pap smear at the beginning. I think like any other time, if atypical cells are found, they want to have another look, hence the colposcopy. I went thru this before I was pregnant. Are they planning to biopsy? I'm not sure how they do things differently if the patient is pregnant.

    IVF #1 ET 1 d3 embryo 10/30/11 BFP

    FET #2 1 d6 embryo didn't survive thaw, transferred last d6. CP :(

I also had an abnormal pap before I was pregnant but all they did was have me come in again in three months for another swab.  Not sure about during a pregnancy though.

  • I am scheduled for a colposcopy next week, she mentioned that they wouldn't biopsy since I'm pregnant but that they would probably watch me closely regardless and if they notice anything else, they'll plan to biopsy after I deliver.

Thanks for the response, after doing some online researching I read that a lot of women get abnormal results during pregnancy, so I do feel much better!

  • I lot of women have abnormal results during pregnancy! They'll just do another pap or colposcopy after the baby is born. If they need to they'll do a biopsy at that point. Most of the pregnant friends I know that had an abnormal pap had it be totally normal after the delivery.
