Do you think it's okay Not to give a baby food till after a year only breastmilk?

  • So it's important to feed them different foods for about four days of one foods and switch

  • I read 6-8 months is optimal.  I'm going to go by his queues on when he is ready.  I wouldn't wait past 8 months.
  • Some babies EBF for a year. So it's not uncommon for them not to be too interested in solids. DD (8.5 months) doesn't care for solids now. We still introduce them, but our pedi said not to worry, she is gaining weight and healthy. She will eat solids when she is ready.

This.  My first was not interested in solids until close to 10 months.  My DS on the other hand couldn't get enough by about 6 months.

  • I wouldn't wait quite a year but i wouldn't worry about starting right at 6 months either. You need to introduce foods slowly to check for allergies so if you wait til a year to start this process I think it'd kind of suck since by a year they can eat a lot more. By starting younger they practice eating and by a year you can give them more than just plain purees and you have a good list of "safe" foods.

  • The food between 6 months to 1 year is more for practice then for nutrition.  It is important that they get used to different flavours and textures, otherwise you might have a hard time getting them to eat veggies, meats etc as kids.  Also, introducing solids later can increase the risk of food allergy.

  • No, it's not okay to not give baby food until a year.  You need to offer Baby the opportunity to experience healthy, solid foods.  However, if Baby has no interest in actually eating anything, that is completely fine.

Food before one is just for fun - but they need to have that fun!

What did your pediatrician say about this?  Do you have a reason for wanting to wait?

  • What is your reasoning behind not wanting to give your baby anything but BM before 1?

  • My understanding is that learning to chew is important for speech development.

FWIW, my 7 month old LOVES to eat.  And it is fun to feed her!  I'm also curious what makes you ask this question.

  • Just to jump in, I learned this past weekend that I only had breastmilk and formula until a year. That's what my Pediatrician told my mother in the early 80s. I thought that was crazy, but then again conventional wisdom changes all the time. FYI- I have no food allergies and my speech is fine. Grammar could use some work lol. I was an average picky eater as a kid, but now I eat everything.

I suggest you discuss this thoroughly with you Pediatrician.
